WON is history at the END OF THE MONTH

OK, WON is history at the end of the month!
I get a message about this from Valve every time I conenct to my server now.

Ok, so it looks like it is time for me to upgrade to 1.6 and POD2.6_MM !!
Has someone written good install docs on installing 2.6 on a steam dedicated server?

Are there any unresolved crashing problems with POD 2.6-MM?
If so I will run my DS under the debugger to help you guys find them.

It HAS to be totally stable to run on my 24/7 DS.
Thanks!

We have a Common Questions subforum to place the thread like this one...;)
Can somebody move this thread to the correct place?

Ok, I moved it!
I guess someone wiht admin should know better?
Thanks for helping to keep things tidy!

Docs on installing pod_2.6_mm on a Steam 1.6 DS anyone?
If not I will document the process I go through when I set it all up!

Re: WON is history at the END OF THE MONTH

yea that would be very nice since our doc people don't seem to be working... :D
well just install it like any other metamod plugin
extract everything to addons\podbot
put the place of the dll in plugins.ini
and replace the dll with a beta such as http://www.mapzap.org/files/podbot/podbotBETA.zip

Re: WON is history at the END OF THE MONTH

1) Where do I get the source code for this version?
I will certainly be debugging/tweaking a few things.
2) Any special version of metamod I need and if so where do I DL it from, I heard someone besides Will is now maintaining it...
Thanks!

>>EDIT<<
Is the latest source always found at that exact URL?

Are you the keeper of the latest version?
I will be sure to forward my changes to you...
THANKS!

Re: WON is history at the END OF THE MONTH

source code can be found http://www.mapzap.org/files/podbot/podbotsrc.zip
it's the latest I put up.

you can just use metamod 1.17.1 with these bots

[edit]
yea it's usually at that address
and yea so far no one else has joined in completely to work on it
I look forward to the changes you make :D

Re: WON is history at the END OF THE MONTH

@ Austin: Look at this thread: http://forums.bots-united.com/showthread.php?t=2139
I know this doesn't help you now, but in the long run I think this would be a great feature to have. Most of the potential PB 2.6mm users will ask the same questions, and an installer would simplify things a lot. I believe we've already had this discussion once, but somehow it just slipped away. This could be a good moment to revive it... you made such a nice map installer, maybe you could make a bot installer, too?
If we have
a) a good bot (and boy, we have one!)
b) a snazzy installer
c) good documentation,
we could spread this bot a bit more - in the long run, all PB 2.5, IvP and E[POD]Bot users could upgrade to PB 2.6mm, but they won't do so as long as this bot is nowhere available as a neat package.

I don't know who's in charge of the general stuff (Huntakillaz???), but the waypointing documentation will be complete this very weekend. I got it 90% finished, and it covers almost everything: adding waypoints, waypoint types, waypoint radii, connection types, manually and automatically adding/removing connections, WP flags. All new from scratch, and much more concise than CF's old docs. And with new pics as well!

I already wrote one, a really great one, but no one was interested!

If Metamod wasn't installed it installed it.
If a newer version of either Metamod or PodBot was installed it didn't
install an older version.

It found the correct directories from the registry.
No one seemed to be interested.

OK, after I figure out exactly how to install on 1.6 I will put one together.

I see! :D
the thread you made with the first installer also gave this bot it's name!

That IS official. I work on the steampowered.com forums. As far as I can gather, this information is valid, and the console message was planned.

Re: WON is history at the END OF THE MONTH

@ Austin: You're right... man, I didn't remember you already had an installer all set up and ready to go... I think at that time we just were focused on ourselves - but as this bot develops, I think it's about time that it be released to a broader public (i.e. by posting it to various CS sites all over the world). But if this is to happen, the bot should be wrapped up in a real no-brainer installation package for all the non-experts out there.

Concerning that WON topic: I know this is official, an I've known for quite a long time that WON was supposed to disappear - what I'm not so sure about is how exactly will this affect me? Will I be unable to browse for 1.5 servers in future? But if anybody opens a 1.5 server and publishes the IP:port somewhere on his HP, could I still connect?

Re: WON is history at the END OF THE MONTH

if you want to play with CS 1.5, you can still install it on Steam, just like what some players do with CS 1.3.

But I don't think you can still connect to a server with different first 3 sections of ip address (sorry I don't know how to say this). i.e., 111.222.111.222 can connect to 111.222.111.111, but can't connect to 222.111.222.111 without valve's cdkey authorization.

However I'm not 100% sure, you can try it then.

Re: WON is history at the END OF THE MONTH

Yes, I've read recently that they want to offer 1.5 via Steam, but that's not the point. I'm not against playing 1.6 at all, it's just that I have dumped Steam because it made my PC crash, so I won't be playing anything via Steam anytime soon, especially since I don't want to reinstall the entire OS just because of this piece of sh*t software. The only interesting possibility for me right now would be to be able to play traditional, non-Steam 1.5...
Thanks for your explanation concerning the IP addresses, I think I got your point. ;) Well, looks like I really have to dig a bit deeper into this matter...

Austin 11-07-2004 23:13

Re: WON is history at the END OF THE MONTH

It means that ALL 1.5 servers on the internet are history.

You can run one but

1) NO one will see you in the CS browser.

2) If they have your IP they still will not be able to auth. with WON server and connect to your server.

The only 1.5 servers will be on a LAN where all addresses are local, in the same subnet, which usually means the first three parts of their ip address is the same, but this is better stated as "in the same subnet" and your subnet is assigned to you by your internet provider.

(Wait, I just thought of something. What if you setup a LAN server but configure you ip subnet mask to be 255.255.255.255 ?? !!!) This way your are basically saying to CS your local LAN is the internet! Probably won't work because of the connect to your router at the other side of the wire at your internet service provider.)

Well there is already one, and has been one for Linux for a while,
nowon4108.pl
nowon4109.pl

cs.kaputtendorf.de

just none for Windows.

If steam wasn't:
1) So big
2) So bad and buggy
3) and didn't spy on me, like installing a start up application that tracks when I am on my pc, (Why do they need THIS?!!!)
4) Was actually an improvment in the game like in keeping up with the other games that are now WAY ahead of Valve in terms of features, graphics and functionality,

I would happily go Steam.

P.S.
I think it was sad they gave LESS then a month notice.

W O R D !!! Well, now that it looks like you're forced to, I wish you more luck than I had. Most of my friends had their occasional hassle with Steam, and it broke two or three times, but could be fixed, and all in all they are... well, let's say they have arranged themselves with it.
Mine broke 7 times in four months, CS never worked for more than 2 weeks in a row, and in the end Steam made my PC crash during OS boot as long as Steam was started automatically. After I took it out, the PC booted, but either Steam would crash immediately or starting CS would cause an immediate reboot. In those few cases where I saw the CS main window, a click on "new game" caused the screen to turn black and the computer to freeze. I tried all tricks I know, even completely reinstalled Steam, but to no avail.
After I completely removed Steam from my PC, the computer went back to normal, stable and reliable operation, just as before.
After I had removed all Steam installers, smashed my Steam CD to pieces, burnt the pieces and thrown the rest away, I felt better, too. ;)
But as I said: That's a very extreme case and not the usual procedure. You will curse it, but most of the time it will work. Anyway, good luck!

As for point 4): True. I like custom player & wepon models, and I don't understand why the Valve guys didn't just make a modelling contest for 1.6: Whoever can make the best model for this and that gun that doesn't exceed x polygons, will be the winner - the model will be included as standard CS model, and the modeller will be given full credit. Many ppl would have contributed nice stuff without even taking money from Valve. But no... :(

well as for mappers checking maps and waypointers waypointing........cs1.5 should still work on a listen.......

right? no inet connection means no WON necessary so a listen is still going to work just fine.

KWo 12-07-2004 14:09

Re: WON is history at the END OF THE MONTH

Also LAN Dedicated Servers CS1.5 should work normaly. I tried many times start DS without inet connection and it worked OK. So for these servers nothing will be changed. You will not be able only to play on internet servers. Or maybe some hacker-cracker will broke the code of checking WON. :D

Whistler 12-07-2004 15:41

Re: WON is history at the END OF THE MONTH

If you open the windows hw.dll and sw.dll you'll find they are NOT dll files at all. Valve just encrypted them to make them hard to crack :(

Yes, absolutely right. That's what I've been doing all the time. I'm still quite busy making and checking waypoints, and I can't fucking afford to wait until Steam decides to stop bitching around and in a rare moment of mercy lets me fire up the game I payed money for...
Ok, so I will get Tactical Ops now to play online with my friends... It's kinda like CS, but with better gfx and Steam-free... plus, you can grab it for 10 euros nowadays. ;) Bye, bye, Valve...

Austin 12-07-2004 19:55

Totally Steamed!

Hey SF, glad to see you are around from time to time!

Yes, we can play LAN game forever, BUT my total enjoyment with CS has been to play on line with 28 bots and 4 excellent players from my group of about 30 people who play the game the same way as I and love playing bots in this situation.

So, I have been thinking.
1) I HATE the fact Steam installs SPYWARE.
WHAT YOU SAY? SPYWARE??????????

Yes, YES, YYYEEEESSSS SPYWARE.
They know when I startup my pc , they know when I shutdown my pc.
And I will soon check out what they know when I am running my pc.

Want me to do a packet trace and show you?
Look at the steam icon in your system tray after you reboot.
What do you think it did as it was starting up?
What the F---K do the need THIS FOR?

OK, I have just decided.
I am not going to encourage the hundreds of people who connect to my servers regularly to support this shite.

I am HISTORY once WON is HISTORY.
Perhaps enough other people will send Valve the same message.

AND yes, my system is acting very weird since I installed "Steam"

Going to do a total reinstall.
Besides I need to do this cause I am finally going the route where I have TWO PCs. 1) that has all my personal files and development files and archived emails that is NOT physically connected to anything not even having a network card and
2) a totally bland generic install that I use to browse and read email.

I simply won't run ANY installers from any where on my "Private" pc.
Not a problem. I have 4 port keyboard/ monitor switcher and it is no deal to run two PCs always. In fact it Is a major advantage when you are waiting on one like when rebooting etc…
I said I was going to do this years ago.
NOW IS THE TIME. Especially since I found a keylogger on my pc I got from SIMPLY browsing to a web site.
This shite is getting BAD......

GRR! Ok this is the LAST time i say this. Steam is NOT spyware. Steam is automatically started at startup for user convenience, and simply that, and the traffic that you think is spying on you is either one of two things:

Authentication with the steam servers, or security module sync. So stop claiming that steam is spyware. If you want ill give you a friggin packet analysis of what gets send. There is only very little encrypted data there, and thats the steam logon. The rest is definately NOTHING to spy on you. And if i wanted to see whether your computer is on or not, i cna do that easier *pets his good old 'ping'*

Satisfied ?
