Default Reworked Waypoints - 27-08-2006

Now that no one in my life is asking me to do things anymore (hooray!) I have some free time. I'm poking at learning to waypoint, with the help of a guy named Stormer (speciality: the aged wolfbot). He assures me that the only way to learn is to start by studying and adding on to existing waypoints.

My question, then, is this: how legit is that? I assume no one cares if I look at their waypoints, but do I cross a line if I change them? What if I like my changes and I re-release them?

It'd be sad to break some kind of intellectual property law, but it'd be sadder still to tick off any of you good folk. I know people have gotten very angry before when others tinker with their bsp files. Personally, I suspect I'd be flattered by the attention, provided I was still credited; but having never actually been in that situation, who can say?

In conclusion, here's a guy with a chef hat. Boy, he's happy-looking.

Ok I hit the wrong key and wiped my first reply..
So briefly

- Nobody is making money on this so observe that rule above all

- Find out who is working on what by visiting the Wiki (ET, RTCW)

- Try to contact them and ask them nicely. If they have done that map only for one target and a similar map exists for the other target maybe you could work on that. Or maybe you could work on a variant map to the map (if one exists).

- Respect any and all copyright notices and change notes. Include and maintain them in your pk3.

- Document what you do in the pk3 file. If starting a new changes files you could use this template. Make certain that you indicate from what version you have "BRANCHED" OUT from. If no original changes file exists then document the original file contents by date for reference

- DON'T 'RELEASE' in isolation. Beta release it to the community for tryouts (First under waypoints). Fritzbot can't select between different versions of waypoints in the \fritzbot directory. So it is best to gain a consensus.

- And..
Wait a second I said briefly...!

P.S. Respect the document what you do stipulation and you are permitted free rein in my WIP files

.one Ringstellung to rule them all.

You can take any of our waypoints and modify them for your own personal use. Re-releasing them, however, is a no-no, unless you get the original waypointer's approval. Having several variations of a map floating around is sure to cause confusion, especially if errors creep in.

I learned by starting with a simple map and by extensively studying the works of the senior waypointers and asking a lot of questions. Study both the RtCW tutorial and the ET Wiki for basic instructions.

Waypointing is a great hobby (and time-eater). Enjoy!
