I have a 9600 pro and wanting to OC a little to improve performance in CS:S. Do I need an extra fan or new cooling unit? Currently the core is about 458MHz (default is about 350MHz).
I usually remove all fans from GXF cards... well, I'd say, it depends how hot it gets. As long as you can touch the dissipator without getting burned, I'd say it's OK. Although that limit is really the hard one.

just reminds me of that image from yesterday ... forget to plug in the pump.
just test that config, if it get's really too hot, you'll get small errors like missing polygons, errors in textures etc. then you know that this isnt healthy for the chip and the ram.

Please take into consideration the f*cking tropical summer and 37°C+ outside air temperatures (Yeah, I've got air conditioning, but it is not too HOT to turn it on ).
dude there is no way you can have it OC that much and not artifact.... did you test the card to make sure it wasn't artifacting... ATI should tell you the temp of the card.. if the temp is above 85C then you need to stop OC

There's a passive (fanless) heatpipe cooler that's easily capable of handling a 9800 pro or Geforce FX 5900 Ultra, achieving lower temps than the stock coolers. I guess that if you put this baby on a 9600, you ought to have some headroom for OC'ing... plus you can increase the cooling performance if your case is equipped with case fans.
The cooler's cold "Aerocool VM-101", costs about 20 Euros and you can google for some online reviews. Just another suggestion.
