Currently I use win98 se , (ahh , again ) , if I just install the upgrade stuff , will it affect my programs ? I mean , can the program I installed in win98 be use in my computer after upgrade to win XP ?
You'll have to reinstall all your programs and format the drive, I don't think you can just "overwrite" 98 with XP. Also, not all your old 98 programs will work on XP.
Thats the extent of my knowledge. First AI programming techie to give a decent response gets a cookie.
Well it also depends on wich version of XP.
I know some versions did the upgrade thingy.
If it doesn't do upgrade then you'll have to reinstall all your programs.
The programs are still on your harddisk but all the registry and entries are gone.
Some programs will work if you make a new shortcut. but more advance programs depend on the registry to work.
So 98 to XP is no problem without formating your drive but you'll probably need to reinstall programs.
Oh, get an old HD (or a DVD-R or a CD-RW) and transfer (or burn) everything. Install XP and put everything back, if you need to reinstall anything, get your installation cds.
no you, YOU MUST FORMAT THE DRIVE ... win 98 uses a file system called FAT32... it sucks... altho XP supports it it sucks... you need to use NTFS... you will need to format the drive and reinstall all the programs
Well, if you have some free HD space, you could partition it, and install windows xp on that partition, then you can have dual-boot. It's easier and gives you more HD space if you just get a 2nd HD. So 1st is for win98, and 2nd for winxp.

FORMAT is NOT required !!!!!
