Default what about wikki for server stuff - 07-03-2004

Hi Council,

my question is, if a wikki for server stuff could be helpfull, i'm talking about a BU internal wikki, containing stuff like whom to ask for what (compiling for linuy, php for the website, win to linux porting of code), what accounts are for what (mail, ftp , development,..) and what are the rules of condiuct on the server(hl stuff goes to /blah, no dangerous files in the public webserver folders).
also detailed stuff like how does the webserver work(php, mysql, hlserver, steam updates), where to get a mysql database quick.
this would make my life easier and could even help for future features to be less work intense.
one future thing i could imagine would be that every linux supported bot would be installed here at the bu server and a install guide could be developed by more than one or two persons. esp. for the opne source bots, but also for popular bots this could help in making proper install pakages.
the switching between bots can be made quite easy, using a secure web interface, also to speed up linux development i could make developer accounts including a common subset of tools and sdk files.

all these internals would benefit from a wikki based server documentation, and since it would not be for the public i feel capable of managing it for the bu developers.

cheers

p.s.
if positive feedback comes in i will make a poll for that

The main advantage of a wiki is that all people can easily edit the documents stored in the wiki. And a wiki usually has a revision control which is also very useful for maintaining all kinds of documents. This makes it very valuable as a knowledge base.

I made some good experiences with a wiki system, even if some bad guy deleted all content it can easily retrieved because of the revision control .

Therefore it might also be useful to give everyone access to at least a part of the wiki, not only the stuff members. E.g. I for myself am not a stuff member but feel that I can contribute much to this community due to my employment and years of experience at this hole matter. In the last days saw a lot of questions which all covered the same topics. Those could go to the wiki and would save a lot of time (well maybe not, some people are very resistant to reading ).

Or another suggestion:
Make use of the FAQ at this website. It's already there but without content it's useless...

yes, members did not exclude regular members, and using a board thread does not seem practical, it's to fancy and it would be hard to maintain an uptodate central document.

Laugh if you want but I still haven't figured out myself what all this "wiki" stuff was about... I landed on a website explaining this but it was very absconse and perhaps I had not the patience to read down the whole dozen of paragraphs. The few I've understood was talking about encyclopedia and reference documentation, right ? Could someone attempt to explain me in a FEW intelligible words what it's all about, and what are the advantages ?
Don't elaborate a reply, I need only a very short introduction. I believe anything I cannot manage to understand in a few words is intrinsically useless.

maybe you just go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page and browse thru the site ... I guess that's the best way to see how it works

Take a look at http://tavi.sourceforge.net/WikkiTikkiTavi, this is the wiki I'm using at my institute for internal documentation. Just browse at this site and explore it and you should understand what it is and what it does. And surely you will enjoy this technique . Especially try the "Sandbox".

There are of course many other wiki implementations and they all have different features, this one is just an example I know quiet well.

short:
it's a cvs suitable for documentation/knowlege

features:
versioning (nothing can get lost)
online editable (with acl)
easy linking within the wikki (easier tags than this board)
easy setup (decomperss and if wanted the acl's)

advantage:
the first can write something about e.g. compiling, the second can correct that, the third uses allready the combined knowlege, with ability to switch back to 1st version.
every user can verify, comment, enhance and delete.

no admin, no moderation, self regulating wisdom.

cheers
p.s.
i don't know of a single wikki _not_ working as expected, anybody ?

will this allow regular members to report to the "wiki" the results of their testing? or would this be developers only section?
