ATI Tool
I have a 9600 pro and wanting to OC a little to improve performance in CS:S. Do I need an extra fan or new cooling unit? Currently the core is about 458MHz (default is about 350MHz).

Re: ATI Tool
I usually remove all fans from GXF cards... well, I'd say, it depends how hot it gets. As long as you can touch the dissipator without getting burned, I'd say it's OK. Although that limit is really the hard one.

just reminds me of that image from yesterday ... forget to plug in the pump.
just test that config, if it get's really too hot, you'll get small errors like missing polygons, errors in textures etc. then you know that this isnt healthy for the chip and the ram. |
Re: ATI Tool
Running since + or - 10:00AM (now it's 9:20PM)
Air cooling, ASUS A7A266-E, AMD Athlon XP 2000+ (1.7 GHz) Please take into consideration the f*cking tropical summer and 37°C+ outside air temperatures (Yeah, I've got air conditioning, but it is not too HOT to turn it on :D). http://img22.exs.cx/img22/2923/asus2rj.th.png |
Re: ATI Tool
dude there is no way you can have it OC that much and not artifact.... did you test the card to make sure it wasn't artifacting... ATI should tell you the temp of the card.. if the temp is above 85C then you need to stop OC

Re: ATI Tool
ya OC runs the life of the chip down ??? i personally would look into water cooling ... maybe simply more fans...
ive already fried 3 cpus :( so it sucks when your chips die on you... i wouldn't really bother OC i dunno... |
Re: ATI Tool
There's a passive (fanless) heatpipe cooler that's easily capable of handling a 9800 pro or Geforce FX 5900 Ultra, achieving lower temps than the stock coolers. I guess that if you put this baby on a 9600, you ought to have some headroom for OC'ing... plus you can increase the cooling performance if your case is equipped with case fans.
The cooler's cold "Aerocool VM-101", costs about 20 Euros and you can google for some online reviews. Just another suggestion. |
Re: ATI Tool
if you have run thru 3 chips it isn;t cause OC is bad it is cause you are doing it wrong

Re: ATI Tool
The disadvantage is that it may occupy the susequent card slot, w/ that freaky dissipator thingy...

I haven't done any of the oc-ing my self, if you look at the picture, I used that Find Max Core, and Find Max Mem. If you look above you'll see the default speed. And I have scanned for artifacts, and it's all fine and dandy. But for some reason it's not topping out like i've seen at diff. sites. I googled "overclocking 9600 pro" and found this: http://www.hardocp.com/article.html?art=NDY0
They were able to OC there 9600 pro core to 567 and mem to 357. How do I do this safelfy manaully, instead of using the "Find Max Mem". I've read that I should increase by 5MHz everytime, and then search for artifacts. About how long do I search for them, cuz the ATI tool has a scanner for that, but it runs endlessly. And also where could i get the proggie to monitor the temperature of my graphics card? |
Re: ATI Tool
You need to check that there actually is a thermal sensor there to begin with before you can check the temperature. I thought Ati tool can detect if you have a sensor, I don't know where to find a program that monitors graphics card sensors, but Motherboard monitor and Sisoft sandra can detect mobo sensors.
personally I just stick my hand against the lower side of the case and fell the heat of the side. Warm means you should be careful and invest in a exhaust blower maybe, and if its hot your screwed as you have probably done damage to your card for a mere ~10fps increase. |
