Remove AIM_OFFSET?
Well I've been playing around with the aim_offset settings and I'm starting to think we should just take it out...
Why? Because I find AIM_OFFSET to be very unhumanlike... instead I'm thinking the way humans miss while firing is because they haven't pointed their cursor completely on target yet.. I've watched my baby brother play.. his aim is incredibly accurate... after a second of aiming... I'm thinking of slowing down the aiming of lower skill level bots.. currently I've stoped them from reaiming for a longer time.. but it just seems too unrealistic.. I've built a beta dll for all of you to test.. Please post your opinion on the matter.. http://www.mapzap.org/podbot/podbotAIM.zip |

so personally I think inaccurate aiming (higher aim offset) is kinda realistic. and another thing, bots always crounch and move left/right while shooting. I don't see this very often in real game, but many real players run left/right while shooting. |
Re: Remove AIM_OFFSET?
i think of removing AIM_OFFSET but adding another setting like FIRE_DELAY time like turn speed but for firing

Re: Remove AIM_OFFSET?
This pool can't be disinterested, because all people at this forum play in CS very long time, so their skill is high. But there are many users-beginers with low skill (low aim too) - so for them who should vote in this pool? I'm agree with g4s. If somebody don't need bots with skill lower than 100, he simply will use bot (100). Beginers can use bot with lower skill (and lower aim, too). All of them are happy now. But when You remove this function - the problem is for beginers bot with good aim if is closer to player - it kill the player by headshoot (and this is much more frustrate for beginers). In oder hand on aim map big AIM gives the effect too much unrealistic (bots with bad AIM can hit nothing). If there is a possibility to change this aim of bots for beginers - they can play and they can incrase they-own skill and aim. The problem is still - how to prepare this AIM for every group (0-19, 20-39..etc). I think this would be better if we could write min_aim and max_aim for each group, because now for exmple AIM of bots (80) is the same like aim of bots (99). For this people liking bot with super AIM PMB wrote his super BOTAIM plugin, unfortunaly not working with current release. :'( The job direction should be rather concentrated how to move back to work this great BOTAIM plugin to work with podbot_mm.dll . I noticed this few weeks ago some trouble with it.
In this case all people (podbot users) will be happy. It's my opinion. If You cut this AIM some of them can leave this bot as too hard... |
Re: Remove AIM_OFFSET?
KWo you didn't read this at all...
I didn't say I was going to make all the bots have perfect aim and hs you all the time... taking out AIM_OFFSET so I can slow down their aiming.. if you're running left and right a lower skilled bot cannot keep up with you... only higher skilled bots. that is what I meant.. |
Re: Remove AIM_OFFSET?
OK - look at this example:
You go to some dark room, and I don't see some bot camping in the corner. OK - it will take You at his target (by AIM) in longer time - for example 2s, but after this 2s it will kill You by a headshot by one shot. This will be very frustrate for beginers. If there is some AIM_OFFSET it have keep fire long time to kill You. This time is for You sufficient for Your reaction to shoot it back. Is this clear now? [EDIT] For solving Your problem with AIM_OFFSET You don't need remove it from the code. Simply use this botskill.cfg and leave this AIM_OFFSET like it was until now. =============================== # In this File you can tweak some of the POD-Bot # Skill Settings # As usual the "#" char starts a comment line # NOTE: If you have inhumanturns turned on in # podbot.cfg the turnspeeds here will be overridden # MIN/MAX_DELAY specifies the Reaction Time in Seconds # MIN/MAX_TURNSPEED is the number of Degrees allowed to turn # in 1 Frame # AIM_OFFS_X/Y/Z are the offsets for aiming (note that HL uses # the lefthanded coordinate system where Z is the Up Direction) # HEADSHOT_ALLOW specifies (in percent) the probability of aiming # at the Head. Or do in this way: AIM_OFFSET_X_MIN AIM_OFFSET_X_MAX AIM_OFFSET_Y_MIN AIM_OFFSET_Y_MAX AIM_OFFSET_Z_MIN AIM_OFFSET_Z_MAX for all skill ranges - in this case the change of skill and AIM between for example BOT (80) and BOT (99) will be continuous (now it's jumping). [/EDIT2] |
Re: Remove AIM_OFFSET?
Ideally AIM_OFFSET should be removed, for the very reason sPlOrYgOn says, because it is not a human-like way of aiming.
The challenge after that, is to build a sufficiently credible and sufficiently challenging aiming algorithm that doesn't rely on random offsets. It's possible: Michael Booth did it in the official CS bot. |
Re: Remove AIM_OFFSET?
Quote:
1. Is this algorithm realy known so good by coders? 2. Is sPlOrYgOn actually ready to implement it? 3. If 2 is not - have You a time to help him (with all needed by him explanation and maybe with preparing some parts of code by You)? The change from AIM_OFFSET to this new algorithm should be continuous - don't remove this AIM_OFFSET from actual code until this new algorithm will be 100% OK. For this new algorithm sPlOrYgOn can add a new cvar (ignoring AIM_OFFSET and use for tests new algorithm - if this cvar is on). After AIM_OFFSET and this cvar should be removed. Is this a good solution now? |
Re: Remove AIM_OFFSET?
IMHO PMB's botaim is close to what we want. But as stated above, it has qust too perfect aiming for longer ranges.. I think (if it is possible) implementing PMB's botaim into our bot and then adding some offset depending (and maybe + a LITTLE bit randomizated) on the current distance to the aimed enemy. This would be a good aiming algorithm after all IMHO....
|
Re: Remove AIM_OFFSET?
This sounds like a nice idea to me. =)
However, KWo has a good point in saying that aim_offset shouldn't be taken out before there's something good (or preferably better, that is) to replace it. Now the magical question is if and how the botaim code can be included in the podbot code... |
Re: Remove AIM_OFFSET?
there's a problem with the bot aim code and this bot...
the botaim code makes these bots look either up or down.. nothing else.. I don't know whats wrong tho.. |
Re: Remove AIM_OFFSET?
I don't see any reason why this code wouldn't work... I'll look into it when I get some time for that (not now).
|
Re: Remove AIM_OFFSET?
About this problem bots looking up or down - I've noticed this since R2.1:
http://forums.bots-united.com/showthread.php?t=1663 Maybe this can help a bit - if You remember what exactly was changed in AIM code since 2.0 to 2.1... Until R2.1 I as used a long time BOTAIM plugin (is great and I was very unhappy when it stoped work :(). But OK - we will wait for You, Pierre. There are many other things to do for sPlOrYgOn - this AIM can wait now. |
Re: Remove AIM_OFFSET?
I've figured it out why botaim was making them either aim up or down...
it's because i was editing pEdict->v.pitch_speed and pEdict->v.yaw_speed values... after taking that piece of code out.. I saw how botaim worked.. It's pretty good except they were aiming off and hitting... and they're turning was sort of annoying.. they kept moving up and down while turning as if they were moving along a sin/cos graph. other than that it's good :D |
Re: Remove AIM_OFFSET?
Great! So now it will be possible to use this BOTAIM plugin again? Or You will include it to code of next beta? But for beginers - maybe will be good if they will can to disable it (some cvar in podbot.cfg...:D).

Re: Remove AIM_OFFSET?
Whatever method you choose, the aiming code really needs a boost...
With the current code, enemy bots sometimes approach each other in a long corridor, but they don't do anything! Then they run into each other, get stuck for a second, free themselves and walk away - without shooting at each other once! :'( The other day when I tested WPs for a map, I saw a CT bot run to a camp WP and crouch - facing the wall, stupid bot. 9_9 Well, that was no problem - the real problem was that on the other side of the courtyard where the CT bot camped, maybe 20 meters (in RL) away, a T bot was already camping and looking in the direction of the CT bot!!! Now, the CT bot was sloooowly turning around until he came to face the T bot after 2 seconds of turning. Then... nothing happened for a second... two seconds... three seconds... and then, finally, the T bot opened fire! At that time, he's had the CT in his face for more than 10 seconds! |
Re: Remove AIM_OFFSET?
Heyyo,
I agree that the botaim code does need changes, cause I hate it how you just come face to face with a bot, n' their aim's perfect at close range cause that aim offset is like, nothing when you're right beside the guys.... lol. I've never seen the bots have probs shooting me like that (maybe I'm lucky?).. the only prob I've seen is when they try to kill me with a knife, but I back up n' waste em with an mp5 or so... lol. :P I also used to use the PODbot Botaim plugins by PMB. :) But 1 prob with it was that the bots only looked foward when running around, they wouldn't check random directions. PODbot v2.6mm does, but it tends to just look at 1 direction forever and then only change for a split second as they prepare to jump... Speaking of bots jumping... can you guys add a pathwaypoint command for jump pathwaypoints? cause sometimes I fight forever to get a jumpwaypoint right when I know it's possible, it's just my movement skill sucks sometimes. :P Anywho, back ontopic. Yeah, your idea for removing the aim offset? there's already a bot that has something like that, and you can only change their reaction time... this bot is called wbot. Try it, I think the botaim code for it is off an aimbot... it seriously feels like it, lol... [EDIT] also note with wbot how they pick up newer n' better pistols, something that I have yet to see with the great PODbot v2.6mm. 9_9 |
Re: Remove AIM_OFFSET?
PMB's Botaim is already included in PB2.6mm code by sPlOrYgOn since about 2 months (if I remember good). The same about removing AIM_OFFSET (already done). ;)
About jumping WP - we were already speaking about this, too. The problem is You never can't be 100% sure the jump is possible to do until You-self do this jump. That's why still exist this system. If You have some problem making jump WP's - maybe ask SoUlFaThEr - he is the biggest specialist of jump maps and WP's for them. But I saw something at [E]PODBOT forum - You started learning C++ - so maybe You can implement this in bot-code and try if this is a good idea or not (sPlOrYgOn seems be busy now)? ;) |
Re: Remove AIM_OFFSET?
Heyyo,
Yep, I'm gonna force myself to learn C++. I've been telling myself for years that I'm gonna learn it n' then make a bot of my own... my original plan was to somehow convert RACCbot to Halo, n' name it the MarDBoT.. lol, that fell through when I realised I stildd diddn't know squat aboot C++, and that Halo doesn't support fakeclients (Singleplayer AI built into maps don't exactly count...), and there wasn't a sdk.. :P Right now this is a little out of my league to implement new things into bots, but I'mma try once I figure out stuff. BTW, your sig PMB that's off that fur fur (something like that) I think it's pretty straightfoward that it writes that sentence 500... lol, now to figure out C++ coding onna grander scale... a bot. ;) |

Re: Remove AIM_OFFSET?
Heyyo,
You know PM's sig where the kid's got detention and he has to write out something like "I will not throw paper balls in class" like, 500 times, and the teach says "nice try"? lol, and then in another thread people are making the actual code for it? :P |
Re: Remove AIM_OFFSET?
A, yeah. :D Now I remember this.
|
Re: Remove AIM_OFFSET?
I see lots of things from other bots I'd like to implement.. especially poxbot's pinball behavior :D
(you know.. when you get near one of them they bounce away.. lots of fun :D) maybe I should ask LightNinja for the source code to epb.. and maybe implement some stuff from there.. |
Re: Remove AIM_OFFSET?
Heyyo,
Yeah, E[POD]Bot had some great parts to it, his new personality idea sounds great, but too bad he never finished it... hopefully someone finishshes it, n' if it gets implemented into PODbot v2.6mm? then that makes PODbot v2.6mm all the more fun. ;) [EDIT] Lol, that sounds good, aboot the pinball behaviour. But you know another good one? FritzBot's "shove you aside" behaviour. Lol, if you stand still, they shove you aside n' just keep going... dunno if you move, I'll have to try that too. :P |
