You're not the same in this situation memed... Steam is also unreadable in French. I'd bet it's the same for all the other languages than English where a message can't be reduced to an assembly of generic words put in a certain order, and where grammar and vocabulary are much more demanding. It just doesn't fit in those 2cm wide buttons

I use Steam in English too... it's a pity because when I play Half-Life or Opposing Force with Steam, the speeches are no more in French

And I have no problem reading/writing English (or little, I hope so) - just "hearing" it is more tricky
