No wonder the Geforce 2 is better. That's nVidia's stupid policy. The bad thing about the GF 4 MX is that it's not a Geforce 4 at all. It's an improvement of the GF 2 MX, but it doesn't have a Geforce 4 GPU core at all.
ATI used to be better in this respect, but nowadays it's just as confusing, especially since "XT" with nVidia means "cheaper and slower" and with ATI "faster & more expensive" - with "SE", who knows...?
There's only one way if you want to make sure you buy something decent (which usually isn't a spontaneous impulse): Read reviews, read reviews, read reviews, read GPU core comparisons, read GFX card roundups, read more reviews... then you'll know what all those numbers mean and how different chips compare to each other in terms of price & performance. Very often you'll have the choice between two cards that are separated by an average real-life performance difference of <10%, but a price difference of 200%. Sad, but true.
