You installed Steam, that's what.
I have never seen a touchier software - it still interacts with my old CS 1.5, btw: If 1.5 crashed and I start Steam afterwards, => CRASH. And if Steam crashed and I forget to reboot before firing up CS 1.5 => CRASH. The only difference is that after a reboot due to a crash 1.5 will start properly, whereas Steam seems to break down permanently after 90% of all crashes and needs to be completely reinstalled afterwards. At least for me it was the only method that helped.
