Remote control of a PC

Ok so, I might be moving to somewhere with no DSL available. If I do that, I might buy a second PC and use it as a file server and keep it at a place where it can have a DSL line.

So, what options is there for remote control of a PC from another PC?

I know that windows XP has some sort of remote desktop thing, but I really don't trust that right now.

How difficult would this be to set up, and what could be done to keep it as secure as possible?

I'm not asking for step-by-step instructions right now, I'm just entertaining the idea and wondering what the technically-literate group of BU thinks about this.

Quick Question, will this File Server be running a NOS (Network Operating System such as Server 2000 or 2003) or regular Windows?

I don't know yet, my only OS requirement that I have is that I will be able to control it from a Windows XP box.

You can set up a ftp server on the "file server" machine. Here is a free ftp server program:
http://www.pureftpd.org/
(and you can download the windows binaries at: http://ftp.pureftpd.org/pub/pure-ftp...naries/windows )

You can also telnet into the machine to "remove control" it. I think there is telnet server function in the Windows XP Professional but as I don't use XP I can't tell you how to activate it.

there is also the Back Orifice 2k (http://www.bo2k.com), it's known as trojan horse but it has actually no backdoors left (it's free software), just set the password.

Heyyo,

Another good way to remote controll comps is a program called "realvnc" heck, lol, you can use it to play some games remotely! I have a pic of me playing "Monkey Island 2" on me sis's laptop from my computer. I was getting a refresh rate of 0.5F/S but close enough eh? lol..

[EDIT]
Fixed link I googled it:
http://www.realvnc.com/

This is how much fun RealVNC is

The Best program for me to create a FTP server and to use it as a FTP client is FileZilla.
This is free open source project. There is two packs. One to create the FTP server and the other is the FTP client.
FileZilla FTP client download
FileZilla FTP server download
I hope that this will fit your needs. :)

Re: Remote control of a PC

If you set up a linux server you can set up a VNC server and connect with a VNC client, this will give you full graphical interface access as if you are sitting in front of the machine. There's simpler methods to connect through a virtual command line terminal.

If you use Windows 2k/XP you can connect through a terminal server session. This will give you full remote access as if you are there and it is much more secure than the remote desktop.

You can also connect to a windows 2k/xp machine through a command line terminal. See this for more details.

How to remotely control your server

Note: if you install PsExec, some virus and ad removal software will flag it as a trojen even though it is not a trojen. The reason why is documented on the PsExec website.
