Doom 3 expansion

I just played the first 10 minutes of it. Could be spoilers of the first 10 minutes, but nothing to earth-shattering happens so it probably won't really ruin much plot.

Basically, UAC re-opens the facility, sends in some marines to the lower levels, you (a new Doomguy, not D3's Doomguy) picks up a new artifact and re-opens the gates to hell.

Everyone dies, etc. etc., you walk around in dark cluttered rooms fending off enemies that teleport in behind you over and over again. As usual, you spend a lot of time squinting in the dark with a tiny flashlight.

So.. basically, more of the same stuff. If you liked D3's gameplay, then you'll like the expansion's. I was kind of dissapointed, was hoping that they'd have made things a bit easier on the eyes and toned down the contant baddie teleporting. Its just not fun. If Doom1/2's enemies all teleported in, think of how much it would have sucked.

It'll probably just collect dust on my desk until the Last Man Standing mod team adds coop support for the expansion's campaign. No matter how bad the game is, it can instantly be made fun again with a couple buddies and some beer. Daikatana was even a blast to play.

Oh yeah, and the HL2 grav gun is in, and you get it within the first minute or so. It can pick up physics objects, enemy projectiles (imp balls) and also it can pick up some small enemies (lost souls, not impies).

Functions differently from HL2's HL2 grav gun. D3's one can only pick up an object for limited time, depending on size. Hold down fire, when it senses an object thats good, it pick it up. Release fire button, shoots object. Press reload to drop object.

Heyyo,

Yeah, LMS is the best mod for D3. D3 built in mp just plain sucks. 4 players... small maps... not the best netcode..

LMS is a great mod, and thank god they got help from NiceMice, creator of opencoop to add multiplayer support to LMS. I think that now since LMS supports the SP maps as well as the LMS maps, and they modded the SP maps for better MP support that they just make both projects one. It's nearly there already, so just a bit of tinkering should get the job done.

Now, this D3 expansion.. *sighs* don't seem worth my cash. Sure, ctf.. but just 8 players, and maybe 5 ctf maps? hopefully Quake 4's done right.. if they mess up Quake 4's mp like D3's? I think I'll lose faith in ID Soft.....

Quake 4 will probably be way more supportive on the Multiplayer side... they have a reputation to keep up with!

Doom, well i was kinda dissapointed in it after i got 5 levels further. And yeah, it sucks on my pc;)

ID didn't make the D3 expansion, it was some other developer.

And I dunno, I lost faith in ID after what they did with Doom3. Maybe it was because of Doom2 I had unrealistically high expectations for the game. For me, nothing beats Doom2. I still play it regularily, even after 11 years of playing it.

Oh, and get Skulltag. It owns.

Heyyo,

Well, we do have a right to have high expectations dude. They pumped out some high-quality games. I dunno, I guess over the years they lost their integrity or something.. cause yeah... Doom3 ain't nearly as good as the prev doom's. I wouldn't be amazed if Doom 1&2 platinum outsold Doom3. :P

I agree that D3 got lame fast (you just knew everytime you saw armor or health laying out somewhere, the wall closest to it was going to suddenly pop open and a monster would jump out).

Realize though, because of the technology, it wouldn't be easy to recreate Doom with D3: the demands on your PC would be too much. Unless they cut a LOT of corners in the art department, it just wasn't in the cards.

They chose to go the route of a presentation: fighting only 3 or 4 highly detailed monsters, in highly detailed environments, at a time, in scripted sets. Periods of calm broken up by sudden frights.

Doom was different: no story, no staging, just mass carnage and adrenaline gameplay.

Its possible to do in D3, but it would look a LOT different.

Heyyo,

Oh, it's possible in D3. Play LMS, it's literally old skool Doom gaming n D3. The crazy music tracks, the massive amounts of enemy's, the basic level design. ;)

Yeah, the model detail was good.. but I think they should've cut the poly's down more n' increase the fight sizes. Not all the model's are that high-poly either though.. The top of the imp's heads are like, a pyramid, so they did try to cut some corners...

They say Quake4 is built on the Doom3 engine.. if so this could be bad news for us unless they optimized the engine bigtime.. cause it feels lacking in gaming smoothness compared to Half Life 2, and HL2 isin't cheap on its visuals either, and I think we can all agree on that.

They'd better fix that lighting for D3's engine if they're going to use it for a new Quake game. The effect that it creates can be allright for some things, but not for Deathmatch.
