counting up sheeps

You may laugh if you want but it worries me a little, though :)

The past days I've been working overnight and trying to sleep when I can in the daytime (short naps, else my boss would notice...) just for the sake of coding miscellaneous craps and doing random stuff that I could not normally have the time to do during the day.

And now once again it's 4:30 AM and I just can't manage to sleep! my body has taken the habit to be awaken at night and to sleep during the day !!!

It worries me, what can I do ?
Counting sheeps mentally doesn't work...
Reading doesn't make me fall asleep, on the contrary (I get excited and usually finish the book before dawn)
Listening to music makes me think and when I think I can't sleep...

Apart from the hammer on the head, do you know a tip to fall asleep quickly ?

I have this problem as well, once, i tried coding something insanly mind numbing, unfortunantly, i ended make it something 1337 :/

various techniques work with various people, for example, if you are a smoker, try menthol ciggies before you try to sleep.

Sometimes thou, just kick your body in the teeth (great trick if you can do it) Stay awake for something like 36hours, the next day your body wont be able to physcially stay awake. For the 36hrs, i recommend strong coffee and lots of CS :p

Try this:

Early to bed, early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise.

:D

Seriously, I tried to make up for lost hobby time by staying up late and extending the hours in my day. What ended up happening is that I became totally useless during both the day and night. For me it just failed to work, and I was better off finding other ways to make up for lost time.

I did however find that I could do a couple of almost sleepless nights in a row, followed by a good long sleep, and that seemed to work OK. What did not work was too many sleepless nights in a row.

Just get a good nights sleep and you'll be fine again.

This sounds so familiar.
Notting helps. as going to bed early.
But that's where the problem a raise. Coding till late is more fun then going to bed early.
Yep untill the day come ya have to o_O

I try, Trub, I try... :'(

Anyway today I'm experimenting Frosty's suggestion (doing 36 hours awake and sleeping like a brute the night after, in order to reset the bio clock back on track...)

Luckily enough strong doses of Metallica all day can keep a dead man awake, so I think this method has its chances after all...
