Offline 1.6 already released ???

I think, the headline says a lot, so there's nothing more to explain.
Is the offline version of CS 1.6 already released ???
I looked at the Steam-Homepage, but I didn't found anything.

Yes, Steam has been recently updated to allow offline playing. To play offline with Steam there is a new option in the Steam main menu, "exit" (rather than "exit and disconnect"). If you exit Steam this way (without disconnecting) your SteamID and the tickets for your current Steam session will be stored on your disk and you will be able to disconnect from the Internet and play offline.

The only drawback is that you need Internet access at least once for your Steam client to register and get a Steam ticket. Sierra must be loving this 9_9

That's great ! It can save me some time and legal issues about copying out the files from Steam cache :) But I have to redownload all things again...

I tried this, and couldn't get it to work. This is seriously frusterating.

Yesterday at the LAN party I'm at we tried to play CS 1.6 (none of us had played it yet due to the Steam-only thing). Only one of us has a decent connection so he had gotten Steam, then updated it and CS through Steam. When he took his comp over to my house for the LAN, we copied his Steam folder to everyone else's comps. We assumed that it wouldn't need to connect to the net, and we should be able to just jump right in and play with no hassles.

Unfortunately Steam never works the way it should. The guy who had gotten Steam, first he couldn't run it. He could get in fine, but when he tried to play a game through Steam, any game, it always said something to the effect of "This game cannot be run off-line". For everybody else it was also screwed up. Steam could be ran and put into memory, but all you could be with the Steam icon in the taskbar is either "Exit" or "Exit and logout". No games menu.

After 15 minutes of failed attempts and much cursing everyone but I deleted Steam. I kept it, hoping I could post on a forum and get some help from people. So what did we do wrong here? Does Steam need to throw some droppings into the registry to work?

yes steam does use registry keys
and also i noticed that different computers had different steam cache files..
you should probably install steam the normal way on each computer.

Thats not going to be possible. Only one of us has DSL so only one of us can get Steam. Last time I tried to get it, updating the Steam platform took 40 minutes and updating CS would have taken 350+ minutes, as it estimated.

Well, I guess until Valve can get its act together and make Steam LAN/56k friendly, we'll still be using good old WON.
