I stopped on POXBot

Before I start: this is not the “which bot is better?” question.

I had a break in “single player CS” for about half a year (diploma project L). I remember playing with POXBot last time. So players/dev: Comparing to POX which one would you recommend for best “human like” experience? Maybe still POX? Just cant play on the net, have CS1.5 and want have some fun.

p.s.

And to all Bots United founders: GREAT JOB! All U great coders and designers UNITE! And do something together… maybe new FPS…?

Hi kedat, and welcome to the BU forums!

If you liked POXBot (I did, too) it might be the wisest choice for you to stick to a bot that's similar in behaviour and performance. This offers several alternatives, as POXBot was based on Count Floyd's unfinished PODBot 2.6 sourcecode. Some other programmers / coders also took this source code as a basis to develop their bots, which as a result behave pretty much like POXBot, but offer better stability and features.

[E]PODbot is one of them - I never checked it, though, since I'm using a different bot. Well, you can just go to the [E]PODbot section and test it! As far as I know, it uses the old PB 2.5 waypoints, so you won't have to d/l new ones.

IvPbot is another PB 2.6-based bot. I tried an old IvP version some time ago and was a bit disappointed, as it seemed very close to PODbot 2.5 then. Bots didn't move across the entire map like they did in POXBot, and in as-maps, the VIP always took the shortest way. But that's some time ago, and i bet it has improved a lot.

JoeBot has been tested by one of my LAN mates a LONG time ago - and according to him, PODBot 2.5 was better. Last week, another one of my LAN mates tested an up-to-date JoeBot version and was pretty pleased, although the bot we are using right now still seemed to be better, at least at a first glance. I never tried JoeBot myself, so I can't tell you more. It uses a different waypoint system than the PODbot family.

If you don't want to mess with waypoints and don't have a server running all the time, where at some time there may be only bots and no humans online, RealBot could be something for you. It doesn't use waypoints; instead, bots learn from human players.

The bot me & my friends have moved to is the PODBot version developed by Pierre-Marie Baty. It works as a metamod plugin, features a nice waypoint editor and offers bot navigation & behaviour that's at least as good as POXBot's, plus way better stability. I'm really happy with it, but once again: I don't know much about other bots.

Since most bots are quite easy to install / uninstall (most just redirect the liblist.gam to the corresponding bot dll), this might be a good occasion for you to try them all and choose which one you like most. For example, ShrikeBot is one recent addition to this site - why not check it? I have been using PODbot for some time new, and I'm a PODbot waypointer, so I'm not in the ideal situation to check other bots, but if I were in your situation (just looking for a bot to play offline), I would. Happy testing ;)

This meant to be my second question, about PMB ver of POD. I bet he didn’t know what is he getting into... Guy CAN code + CAN think = very promising combination :). I'll give it a try, but I thought POX went long way from POD and PMB was just fixing ver 2.6.

Thnx for detailed answer and your time >BKA< T Wrecks

Re: I stopped on POXBot

Actually that's true, I'm just FIXING bugs in Count Floyd's bot, I don't intend to add any feature - the goal is to recover the same performance as POD-bot 2.5 with the very buggy 2.6 source code ; this way perhaps some people will reconsider putting POD-Bot + mEAn mod servers online while waiting for the next generation bots :)

The GameExpirience is really OK. I like it. "Just FIXING", heh... keep "fixing" it then we will have next generation BOT ;) unless the "next generation" is something that our minds can't reach today... then I'm waiting for that.

Re: I stopped on POXBot

Have you popped into the RACC-AI thread already? If so, you've seen one hell of a next generation bot coming. If not, go there and be prepared to see something that's more than just promising...
But for the time being, PMB's "fixed" PB 2.5 is really a great alternative. The biggest improvements in contrast to the old version are the full MetaMod compatibility and full support for as-maps. Not to mention the stability and Austin's waypoint editor (although this is also just a "fixed version"). I love it and I will stick to it for some more time, I guess.

Happy bot fragging! (or being fragged by bots, hehe...)

No, I just read some theory. WOW! I can't imagine fitting all that AI in one frame... must be much more CPU hungry than POD.
