what was your favourite fps ?
Oldies but goldies...
Just to have a little fun. I'm not talking about all the recent games, but let's say we'll range from the release date of the first 1st person shooter game ever to 1996/97 (discarding Half-Life, then ;)) So what's the FPS game that you enjoyed the most ? What's the one that thrilled you the most ? The one that you regret the most ? I'll speak for myself: I've never been fond of Quake... for one single reason: quake is brown. Simple. That's all shades of brown on the screen. I wonder why they didn't make this game monochrome, that wouldn't have made a big difference :D I enjoyed Wolfeinstein 3D a lot, although the levels resembled more a maze than real FPS maps. The enemies and the sound ambience were really convincing, though... hearing some enemies scared the shit out of me each time they were waking up :P I enjoyed Duke Nukem 3D too... shooting these pigs and hearing them scream was a lot of fun :D But the one I enjoyed the most was Doom. Definitely. The gloomy ambience, the hellish music, that darkness, but especially that double barrel shotgun which was really able to blow enemies away. KABLAM!... and the imp collapses, projected on the wall. Let this be a nostalgia thread. 9_9 |
Re: what was your favourite fps ?
i never really finished wolfenstein.. actually i got some idea of it having no end.. cant say WS was any of my good ol ones..
tried doom1 like once.. doom2 was more fun and i finished it 2 times before i got bored.. this was when i heard about lan games.. i played quake alot.. remember being the one who was a little late to get into lan playing.. i played single player like 4 times.. but that didnt make me ready to meet real ppl in actions.. so i got killed and feelt like a newbie when it came to it... got my first bots.. practiced.. and became leet.. but still had alot to learn.. i moved i away from cs (too long story) and playin bf1942 with mods like desert combat, wastelands and silent heroes. im not bad at it at all.. if you see me on a server i will surely be somewhere in in the top.. unless i get team killed 200 times.. my next move.. BFV.. (death to ppl who things TKs is fun!) |

Re: what was your favourite fps ?
Well I vote Duke Nukem 3D.
Ahhh, I played many custom maps after I was done with the SP part. Then I got into the user files and started altering the values... I remember all the bugs and crashes that came out of our little too powerful pistol, flying enemies anyone? |

Re: what was your favourite fps ?
cheater! :D
BTW do any of you know what the giant buffalo skull tells us in the last level of Doom II when you enter the amphitheater ? all I know is that it sounds scary, but I never managed to understand what it was saying... |
Re: what was your favourite fps ?
1P gameplay is funier with enabling all features (19 sec for level 1), but hey you could wake me up on jan. 1st and just scream "DOOM" i would answer "idkfa, leave me alone"

Re: what was your favourite fps ?
cant believe quake got so low..
|
Re: what was your favourite fps ?
quake sucks big time, it's clours and controll are insufficient, no (real) aux controlls possibe (i.e. joypad and other input but mouse and keyboard).
|
Re: what was your favourite fps ?
... although it's a milestone in game gfx development. but to me it often looked more like a technology demo than a game.

Re: what was your favourite fps ?
i know that they are based on the same engine, butl being build on and being the same is not equal. q1-q3 are simply not playable with a joypad, CS/hl is. from the point of the user they are not the same. one works as expected the other not.
quake onyl works with analog joystiks, cs can do directplay (though i don't know about explicit force feedback support) |
Re: what was your favourite fps ?
why play with joypad anyways..? i cant find any good reason to it.. are you one of those who thinks fps at xbox or ps2 is really great?

Re: what was your favourite fps ?
Errr... in an attempt to get this thread back to topic :D :
I just voted for Duke Nukem 3D. I had played Quake before, and although some of the true 3D gfx was quite amazing, all in all it looked too ...yes, brown! You're right, PMB ;) . And I hated this running into buttons and stuff. But then, in Duke3D, you could actually PUSH buttons (*gasp*), look at monitors that showed the view of observation cameras, enabling you to spot some enemies before they could spot you! The whole environment was interactive, you could do so much stuff! (Remember playing pool billard, smashing windows and TV screens, blasting holes through walls, etc ?) And the humour! There's no way I'll ever forget this "Your face... your ass... what's the difference?" after blasting an alien to pieces with the RPG. :D Besides, the atmosphere was great. Whereas Q , Doom and WS showed rather unrealistic, more (Quake) or less (Doom) monotonous dungeons, in Duke3D you walked through video shops, striptease bars, toilets (hey! even the "terrorist sitting on toilet" model is actually a gag stolen from D3D, where in some toilets you'd find an alien trooper sitting on a toilet! And he even flushed the toilet neatly before defending himself... nice manners for an alien). Then the second episode with that large space station, the meetings with Indiana Jones, Luke Skywalker etc., and last but not least good background music in MIDI format - I've still got my 1992 SB 16 with Roland Sound Canvas Wavetable, which made the MIDIs sound all the better and easily beats 90% of all non-professional soundcards released afterwards when it comes to MIDI sound. Man, those were times... and then I started building Duke levels and enjoying the simple editor. That also made me realize how much 2D the game actually was and how well they hid that. As far as I remember, a large and well-designed level took up roundabout 200 kB... And in Multiplayer, I drove my friends to despair in "Hotel Hell"... hell, yes. Damn, I'm feeling old. 9_9 |
Re: what was your favourite fps ?
Aaah, Duke3D. Remote ridicule... shrink rays... strippers... byte granular errors.
|
Re: what was your favourite fps ?
Damn you T Wrecks, you bring back too many memories...
I sat day and nights playing Duke 3D... Ahhh, I still got in my shelf, worth installing win98 again if I just had proper DOS Sound Drivers. I loved smashing TV's. I remember the best, in a strip bar second level. Well, there is a garage style door, I pulled the enemies close to me and squished them in the door. The sound you heard, the visuals of the squished enemies and not to mention the text you got in the upper left part of the screen which said "SQUISH!" Made me laugh like hell, man I recall the laughter. |
Re: what was your favourite fps ?
I mapped for Duke Nukem... I had made a fortress-like map with dungeons and towers.. it looked not that bad but the FPS was horrible. The fact is that I had discovered that you could make overlapping sectors (provided the 2 sectors don't see each other) and I had made an interior for each building in the castle, including several levels in the towers :D
too bad I don't know where it's gone... I had made a lot of improvments to another multiplayer map, it was a big town. I made a cathedral too but it wasn't looking very good. Darn, I was always hitting the 1024 sectors limit :D The SOB-bot for Duke3D was a lot of fun too :) wanna play Duke3D again in real 3D and OpenGL ? http://jonof.edgenetwork.org/buildport/duke3d/ |
Re: what was your favourite fps ?
Windows native... Pierre, you... Well no cursing here, Back to Duke3D again, back to the old days, back to the old memories.
|
Re: what was your favourite fps ?
Hmmmm, good to know I'm not the only one who still appreciates this old fps.
Yeah, "squishing" enemies was fun - especially when the door opened again and you could see what was left of your former enemy... I believe there were even some custom maps with names like "squishy" etc, where there were some buttons that made the ceilings in whole sections of the map come down, squishing several multiplayer enemies at once. People really seemed to love that. Oh, and not to mention zillions of conversions of the first DOOM level fpr Duke3D. I remember the only map I finished halfways was a hidden submarine base, complete with hidden entrance behind a waterfall etc. etc. ... although I'm almost sure it was nothing in comparison with what a maniac like Pierre-Marie seems to be able to do with any game he likes... I think some of my favourite places and levels were the prison level (which somehow reminded me of Stephen King's "Shawshank Redemption" (remember "behind the babe"?) ), the "Lunar Reactor" level in the 2nd episode and that huge dome on the moon, where a whole flock of those self-destroying drones with their high-pitched whine came in and made you circle the crater running and shooting for your life... IMHO, fps never got better than that. Technically, of course, but not regarding the atmosphere... only Unreal, perhaps. Oh, and Pierre-Marie: Thank you for the link!!!!! Grrreat news, har, har! 8D "I'm Duke Nukem... and I'm coming to get the rest of you alien bastards!" |

"I am not afraid of no quake"

Re: what was your favourite fps ?
...which brings us back to cs_italy! :D See how visionary Duke3D was? *LOL*
Damn, I was too slow! This was intended as a response to PMB's post... |
Re: what was your favourite fps ?
CS_italy? what did that have any connections with Duke to do? I can't remember hearing opera when playing Duke 3D...
|
Re: what was your favourite fps ?
cs_italy has chickens. A young chicken is a chick. A slang term for women is "chicks".
|
Re: what was your favourite fps ?
Yeeeah... good man, HangFire. Don't kill the chicks... ;)
Nope, there was no opera in D3D - but btw, the Karaoke gag from D3D ("Born to be wiiii-hi-hild") has been copied in CS. Remember de_vegas? |
