CS 1.6 gets LAN Version (Official this time ;) )
Official News by www.cstrike.de :
(Srz, is in German and I'm to lazy to translate 9_9) LAN-Version von Steam/CS kurz vor Testphase - jwm 12.02.2004 22.38 Was lange währt wird hoffentlich irgendwann gut. More details will be available when its released, but in short if you have a full cache (i.e its 100% loaded) then you will be able to play without an internet connection. Link: http://www.cstrike.de/fullnews.php?newsid=8806 --- In diesem Sinne, lasst uns guter Dinge sein XD Ps.:If someone wants to translate, pls do so ;) |
Re: CS 1.6 gets LAN Version (Official this time ;) )
That's great! English would be better... and should be posted in offtopic forum!
|
Re: CS 1.6 gets LAN Version (Official this time ;) )
Ok, moved.
in basic english: Alfred Reynolds anounced on the HLDS_LINUX list that final beta testing will be done on the offline CS version and it will be released "asap" [*g* what else to use for translation]. If you have a full Steam cache (100%) you will be able to play w/o being online. Together with the news that Valve hired Bram Cohen makes us hope that Valve is reacting to the massive and enduring community brickbat [criticism]. Cheers memed |
Re: CS 1.6 gets LAN Version (Official this time ;) )
Aaaaahhhh, finally... well, it was about time, too!
You know, if you're on a bandwidth-limited flatrate, you just don't want to waste 50% of your bandwidth for something that'll be obsolete the following week... That's why I'm still using my trusty old 1.5. 9_9 |

sv_mehasupdate 1
Ok, i succeded t download Steamupdate (early in the morning 9_9 )
1. This Update took me about a maximum of 5 minutes to download (3x 100%) 2. You have to log in ONCE (!) to use offline mode, thats atm the biggest problem ... (don't dare to delete "clientregistry.blob" that would undo your login ... ;) ) 2. Once logged in you you can disconnect or what else you want and just restart steam (I advise you to disconnect, for otherwise steam WILL try to connect :( ) 3. When starting Steam it trys to find Valve (*urks*) Content Servers and after a while it ask you to retry or work offline ... So download have fun and play ... gl and hf @ all 8) --- For the once having probs, ask me perhabs I can help you ... |
Re: CS 1.6 gets LAN Version (Official this time ;) )
What about Deciated Servers??? Or is this only on the client side?
|
Re: CS 1.6 gets LAN Version (Official this time ;) )
Think it's clientside as you can make dedicated servers LAN only.
|
Re: CS 1.6 gets LAN Version (Official this time ;) )
I don't get the way Steam works on LAN. You exit Steam and so it disappears from the taskbar but it's still running as a daemon in the background ? What's the point of quitting Steam then ??? it's just as if our puters were running a little Steam auth service available to localhost ?
And what if I don't trust Steam and don't want this crappy service to run AT ALL ? well, I can't play my games then. Stupid thing. |
Re: CS 1.6 gets LAN Version (Official this time ;) )
Well, during the DDOS attack at steampowered I tried this LAN version.
The trick they do is simple: If you used the "Exit" menu (and not the "Exit and Logout" menu) the steam auth data is kept on your disk. The next time you start steam it tries to connect to the auth server. If it cannot reach it you'll presented a screen where you can select if you want to play on LAN or exit steam... I also noticed the running steam process after "Exit" but it disappeared after some time... |
Re: CS 1.6 gets LAN Version (Official this time ;) )
Oh, that's just great. :| So if I wanted to play 1.6 offline, all I'd have to do would be a. run one storey down and shut off the router, which would cut all 3 computers in our house off the internet and disable the LAN interconnection between them, b. run back up and fire up STEAM, c. wait till it has finally realized that "STEAM call home" is not available right now, and d. answer that in this case I'd like to play offline, pretty please?
HOW STUPID IS THAT???? >:( >:( >:( Would it be too much to ask that Valve offer a startup screen where you can select "go online and find 1.6 servers" or "play offline on LAN" ? The sad thing is, I suspect it IS too much to ask... :( But what if I installed my trusty old ZoneAlarm and told it in the "program control" section that STEAM always has to ask for my permission in order to access the 'net? In this case ZA ought to prompt me with a screen "STEAM is trying to access the internet. Do you want to allow that?", and if I answered "no", theoretically it should work, huh? Sure hope it does... |
Re: CS 1.6 gets LAN Version (Official this time ;) )
@ZoneAlarm:
That trick should do it too ;) @rest of posting: If you have an internet connection you should be are to play on LAN too - without interrupting the internet connection. This new "feature" is for LAN parties which don't have an internet connection. |
Re: CS 1.6 gets LAN Version (Official this time ;) )
Ah, well - at least that. Good to know that although STEAM still sucks it doesn't suck quite as much as feared...
Thanks for making that clear, Terran. Oh, btw, aren't you and your clan mates those guys who did such terrific HLTV overviews? Like for cs_hive_apc, for example? Right from the start, I knew that I had seen your Avatar pic before... now I remember where! Those were some of the best OV's I've ever seen. I've only reached a comparable level some weeks ago, and after making about 25 OV's I'm ashamed to look at nowadays... |
Re: CS 1.6 gets LAN Version (Official this time ;) )
Yes, those overviews were made by a teammate and me 8). But he did the most of them (and the really good ones!)
