There is a simple way around this. Disable player killing for minors. Of course, FPS games would be difficult; you would have to have players teleport or something.

I don't know if this is good for China. It drives game developers away.

No, it is not good for China, nor any other nation. Its more pointless social meddling that China's government loves to do.

Online games are huge in south east asia, and this will seriously hurt their game developers.


Unfortunately all politicians of the world, not just China's, believe that ignorance is not a deterrent from lawmaking.

Well maybee the age of 18 is a bit to high.
But i think its a good thing to prevent very young minors from see that stuff.
The kills you can make in some of the games are just to gross.
And it's very high detailed looking like humans. Not like the abstract violence in lets say tom and jerry.

Yeah today China is probably even more capitalistic than my own country! It is indeed a wierd mix. It is a "smart" mix though, they have the strong control from communism and economic growth from capitalism.

Here in Brazil we have the same sh17, but our "esrb" is not an imposition, i.e.: I'm 16 and I can normally walk into any major retail store and buy Leisure Suit Larry (not GTA:SA, the sale has been prohibited in Brazil since Vice City ¬¬... oh well), no questions asked. The game even has a 18+ advisory printed on the box, but who gives a damn?

I have no more comments about this issue, as some of those online games are too addictive and really have many disadvantages; however banning is definately not the best solution. (they are also proprietary software)

I'm not sure if Quake or CS counts here, however Quake3 is banned at all and we all have to use illegal copy from the Internet.

Yeah, true whistler. Illegal downloading these days is usually more popular than buying games. No age restrictions as well..

I remember Far Cry was actually banned from Germany, the same country it was created in until they released it without blood I believe.. rediculous stuff eh?
