FreeBSD...

Is pretty fast :)
Just installed it(4th OS :P). Got a nice and fast desktop with kde 3.4 now. Only the sound acts a bit weird...o well.

Nice avatar. I have another version of it, featuring the same mascots, but in a slightly different position ;)

Debian also has a "GNU/kFreeBSD" distro which uses the kernel of FreeBSD with GNU packages (e.g. bash instead of csh, GNU fileutils/findutils/shutils instead of those "ancient" UNIX tools which are essentially the same as AT&T UNIX v7) and also uses the Debian's package management system...

Note: this is still "testing" version

an X-based game similar as CS2D, including single player and multiplayer game

you can choose your favorite free software or "open source" character (including GNU, Linux Penguin, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, KDE, GNOME, RedHat, SuSE, Richard Stallman, Linus Torvalds, etc.) and start fragging :)

as this only uses X and not KDE/GNOME specific, you can run this game under most of UNIX-style systems, including GNU/Linux, *BSD, and even the incompleted "real" GNU system (with Mach/Hurd as the kernel). This should work with Cygwin with X Window system if you are using Windows

Re: FreeBSD...

I find the comparison Bill Gates <-> Hitler a bit.. awkward, to say the least :|

stefanhendriks 26-05-2005 18:45

Re: FreeBSD...

yes there is no way that is comparible. Also, i even think Bill Gates thinks he does it for the best of man kind... (as a person). Or am i saying something dangerous now? ::)

@$3.1415rin 26-05-2005 18:59

Re: FreeBSD...

yep, that comparision ain't funny at all. and not justified.

Exilibur 26-05-2005 21:42

Re: FreeBSD...

i honestly think that hitler did what he did because he thought it was for the best of manking (or the pure arial race or whatever)... I like the comparison, not because it's justified, but because I'm generally pissed at ms for msn7, which is bloatware filled with commercials. But anyway, i've downloaded trillian, and now I'm feeling much better... thanx trillian.

Pierre-Marie Baty 26-05-2005 21:46

Re: FreeBSD...

trillian is almost as bloated as MSN, if you want an advice you should get Miranda...

Anyway, as for the Hitler/Bill Gates issue, I think that comparison should not be made anyway. Hitler was promoting an ideology. Saying the same of Bill Gates is insulting, and not only for him. I suppose you see my point.

@$3.1415rin 26-05-2005 21:52

Re: FreeBSD...

and comparing both might also neglect to a certain extend the crimes hitler has committed, which'd be a crime itself in germany afaik. B.Gates hasnt killed millions of ppl.

Pierre-Marie Baty 26-05-2005 21:54

Re: FreeBSD...

well, THAT was my point.

stefanhendriks 26-05-2005 22:14

Re: FreeBSD...

yes. The whole ideology stuff is not what it is about. Its about the crimes....

I suggest this is the last thing said about this issue ;). Never compare Hitler with anyone that has NOTHING to do with warfare or other brutal historic events.

Yes I liked the previous topic more :)

Anyway sound works better now; needed to set the buffersize bigger.

@PMB:
know any csh tricks? or is bash better :P

Pierre-Marie Baty 26-05-2005 22:41

Re: FreeBSD...

I'm with bash all the time, mostly because I like the default settings and I don't want to take the time to dig into a painful config. But I've head that csh is more powerful indeed.

This is indeed a great thread. Quite a bunch of chicks and quite a bunch of topics in one topic:)

OK :) Some people seem to like zsh even more...gotta try that one out too :)

Yes, you say FreeBSD and you get: pictures of tux/beastie, the game xtux, BSD/Linux chicks and even a discussion about Billie and Hitler.
Quite unique :)

Whistler 27-05-2005 12:33

Re: FreeBSD...

csh is actually not POSIX-compliant and also lacks some "modern" features. however it's smaller and it's the original BSD shell

esr seems to have that picture removed, it's originally linked at the "Microsoft-only future" word in this page:

Re: FreeBSD...

Whistler, if you're still trying to compare Bill Gates and Adolf Hitler, we're not going to get along very well, I can assure you.

Please clarify.

- Note: this is only engaging myself. So far.

I ignored this thread for a while now, I fainally come here expecting a dry BSD disscussion and instead I find pr0n and Adolf Gates.

Man I love this place :D

I don't say this, Eric Raymond did so. And I haven't argued for anything yet.

And the only reason I posted that picture is I just want to find something Windows-related and doesn't promote Windows.

On the other way, comparing the other people with J. Stalin is wrong as that too if so.

Edit: just as before I'm not trying to argue for anything; but if you want to interpret it in the way you like, how can I change that?

Pierre-Marie Baty 28-05-2005 18:26

Re: FreeBSD...

OK, let's calm down. We all know your violent anti-Microsoft pro-Stallman ideas, but we are also witnessing an increase in your aggressivity against them in your posts.

The only thing I want you to understand is that 1°) you are by no means helping your cause, and 2°) posting a picture like this was VERY insulting (and not funny at all), and the least you could do would have been to apologize and not post a link to yet another anti-Microsoft rant after that like you did.

Case closed I suppose.
