Showing off new hardware..
As promissed to the guys on the IRC channel.
Im now gunna show my brand new gigantic TFT monitor. :D Finaly got my new PC hardware. Old one was had it's best time. It failed booting not even giving the post beep anymore. Tried to fix her up with new memory to no avail. Tried new 350W power supply but even the fresh juice didn't make it work. The very old scsi (region free) DVD player wasen't upto date anymore. not playing burned R / RW disks. So all in all it was time for new. Some high lights of the new system specs: AMD 64 3000+ cpu PCIe nForce gigabit motherboard (K8N) PCIe GeForce 6600GT 128GDDR3 ram 1G DDR400 ram But best of all id the 19" TFT Philips monitor. WoW ... it's big. Compared to it my 19"CRT (18,5" viewable) is small. 1280/1024 resolution ohh yeah sharp is the word. A little teaser. http://jasp.xs4all.nl/tft/imag0153.jpg And a few more. Also the PC and compared to old crt monitor. http://jasp.xs4all.nl/tft/imag0150.jpg http://jasp.xs4all.nl/tft/imag0152.jpg http://jasp.xs4all.nl/tft/imag0154.jpg http://jasp.xs4all.nl/tft/imag0156.jpg http://jasp.xs4all.nl/tft/imag0156.jpg http://jasp.xs4all.nl/tft/imag0173.jpg Pictures bad quality because lack of day light. This crappy camera has a hard time in the dark even with flash light on. I really need to re do them at daylight. That is when im home when it's light. :-) ================== /* edit */ @Rick. Yep it worth it and have not any regret buying this one. |
Re: Showing off new hardware..
hehehe Nice Shrike! :)
Tried your monitor with some of the latest fps games and compared it too your CRT? Just wondering if there is still difference in speed... Oh and how is your PCIe card? :) /me buys same monitor when he has money... EDIT: LOL you replied before I even could post :) |
Re: Showing off new hardware..
I already have a TFT running here for 6193 hours, and back when I bought it, it was expensive and new, too, although it's only a 17'' ( also 1280*1024 ), 19'' where almost twice as expensive at that time, and I didnt wanna spent 2200€ for a screen :)
havnt bought any new stuff for years, except a hd one year ago |
Re: Showing off new hardware..
Wow not by long 2200euro. That really would be to much for me to.
This one costed me 375 Euro. @Rick. yea i remembered you asked to tell if it worked out as i saw you on the member list. I played a little HL2 with all graphics set to high and full anti aliassing etc etc. It ran lag less. didn't check the frame rate as i didn't knew the command anymore. No a reall compare but i didn't see slow game. I think the 12ms is just about enough to not see any pixel fade delay. |
Re: Showing off new hardware..
what is the refresh time on that tft?
heard that if its over 16 ms it sucks for gaming.. |
Re: Showing off new hardware..
Ahh must have just missed my post.
It's 12ms |
Re: Showing off new hardware..
Nice hardware, I would buy one of these screens :)
Also, nowadays TFT screens at 12ms are faster than CRTs when the contrast & lum are at 100%. Try watching a movie in the dark on a CRT (not your TV), you'll see CRTs have much more remanence than what you could think. |
Re: Showing off new hardware..
/me bows to your computer...
|
Re: Showing off new hardware..
me got amd 64 3200+.. :p
only 512 ram.. but im planing on upgrading.. what i need: ram 512.. dvd burner.. dual layer.. hardrive 200 gig (sata).. money i got.. in dollors.. around $300 rougly translated,, but.. i dont know how much i can spend.. so ill buy one thing and then ill wait.. until i know.. dunno what i need most.. and for the burner i will get lower price.. |
Re: Showing off new hardware..
Nice PC Shrike, makes mine look like a crippled old man.

Re: Showing off new hardware..
I don't trust Philips. I've had three things from them that broke to easily.

That is the front panel. At the 3 rectangular holes gunna be 16*2 lcd displays. At all the 5.5mm round hole comes push buttons. Button at left 6 on row are like the winamp play buttons. Button matrix is for selecting songs from a play list. ( without it would be pretty nasty to select song 843. ) Plus right below is little square space reserved for IR remote control. Well i guess you've seen the other picture to. The electronics hardware and monitor stand. Been working quite sometime now on this project. This mp3 player is gunna work on the parallel ports on my linux server. As a plug in to XMMS media player. Hardware is almost done now but software is yet only at 30% finished. @sfx1999 I got a lot of Philips harware non of it broke. ever. @pmb You eagle eye. :P |
Re: Showing off new hardware..
wow, looks crafty :) can we see pics of the electronic ?
|
Re: Showing off new hardware..
OK no problem :-)

Re: Showing off new hardware..
Got a schematic for me to look at?
|
Re: Showing off new hardware..
This is the button / keypad schematic only.
Other parts I have to draw yet. Had to add some to this drawing to make it complete and compliant to how the actual hard ware is now. Had only a few scribbles on paper rest i build from top of my head. It's a simple switch matrix connected to the two input registers of the printer port. http://jasp.xs4all.nl/tft/keypad.jpg Also available for tinycad program. (Maybe also other cad's but i dunno. never tried that) keypad schematic CAD file I'll post the LED schematic and IRsensor asap. |
Re: Showing off new hardware..
OK, now it's the time when I leave this thread... To much maths for my brain... I HATE maths...
|
Re: Showing off new hardware..
It doesn't seem too complicated at first glance, if you've even taken high school level physics then you should at least have a gist of whats going on there.
|
Re: Showing off new hardware..
What has maths got to do with breast implants?
|
Re: Showing off new hardware..
I am at High School, but I haven't studied that part of physics... Just the dynamics and heat parts... :P
|
Re: Showing off new hardware..
actually the matrix is confusing me too, to some degree that is. I have no clue what everything does, except that it has to do with some power circuits or something. But then again, i don't care about hardware , i am all software :)
|
Re: Showing off new hardware..
Ahhhh... those schematics reminds me of the good times :D
Personally I'd have used the RS232 UART with a MAX232 chip to convert back and forth to TTL levels, because with that setup you'll monopolize your printer port :) *edit* while you're at it why not put a cheap microcontroller for the serial, LED and LCD logic such as a 80C552 ? You can reprogram it countless times, it's an EEPROM. And it can be programmed in C, even :) @Leagle: :D you silly |
Re: Showing off new hardware..
Well you can't fail to call it hardware, but I'd hate to be the one doing the installation.;)
|
Re: Showing off new hardware..
Still learning all that stuff, but that schematic makes sense! Even the reason for pull-down (or was it pull-up? it's a little blurry on my screen) resistors! (debouncing). Makes me want to look at ADC internals again (never fully understood how they work).

OK shrike... you've been pestering me on IRC for a while to check out this page.. now i have.. and i'm jealous as feck.. happy now? ;P
|
Re: Showing off new hardware..
Wow I've never thought of making a matrix like that before. I would have polled the buttons and used diodes to prevent ghosting.
|
Re: Showing off new hardware..
and in all this technobabble.. (Ok, so i understand it.. but meh)
MY GOD! THAT WOODEN BOX IS FUCKING AWFUL LOOKING! :/ |
Re: Showing off new hardware..
hehehe rofl.
Wait till it's all mounted together. Sanded and spraypainted. It'll be a GOOD monitor stand :P Considering that 90% of all materials used is waste material reused from old/discarded projects and hardware. Only few things i bought are a 5.5mm and 3mm drills and sandpaper. (still have to buy spray paint) |
Re: Showing off new hardware..
Cant show it yet, but i can tell you:
19 inch... tft yes... flatscreen :) 1024x1280 max resolution. w00t :) |
