Firefox tweaks: Browse the Internet like a Google bot!

Get the User Agent Switcher extension for firefox here.

Install it.

Restart Firefox.

Using the User Agent extension, add a new agent called "Google".

Add this as the "user agent" string:

Googlebot/2.1 (+http://www.googlebot.com/bot.html)

Now you can browse the internet and see what a Google bot will see. What will happen is that when you connect to a website, the website will think that you are a Google bot and allow you to access webpages that you may normally not be able to access. For example, you can by-pass annoying ads and the free registration processes that some sites make you go through to connect.

AFAIK it's perfectly legal to do this, although some may say it's unethical. Use your better judgment, and if you want you can always click on the ads or register.

Making people register for sites is unethical, so it all evens out.

Too bad IE doesn't allow us to modify the User Agent :(

Konqueror also has such a function originally, and it can even use different info for different web sites :)

for IE maybe you can hexedit the dlls in windows\system32 dir but M$ will catch you into prison if you are caught doing that :D

[edit]
if you want to use KDE and its applications in Windows...
http://kde-cygwin.sourceforge.net/

however it's a bit difficult as it relies on Cygwin.

Trolltech has announced that their Windows version of Qt 4.0 will be released under GPL, perhaps we will have ported Windows KDE applications after that

You can do this with opera too btw, no plugins needed :)

I'm currently using Mozilla when I'm on linux, didn't like Konqueror very much... And I can't figure out how to install Firefox, can somebody help me?

Whistler 05-03-2005 10:58

Re: Firefox tweaks: Browse the Internet like a Google bot!

I think Firefox is included with the latest testing version of Debian GNU/Linux...
if you aren't using Debian, you can download the official binary or source code at
http://www.getfirefox.com

here is the direct download link of the latest version for GNU/Linux:
http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.o...ux-i686.tar.gz

after installing it, create a symlink or launcher on the desktop to <install_dir>/firefox and double click this icon you'll start the firefox.

Anyways I've seen no reason to use Firefox if you already have Mozilla, as Mozilla contains all the functions in Firefox.

I use Mandrake 10.1, and <install_dir>= wherever I want?

They tell me to run some command-line stuff
Code:

          tar -xzvf firefox-1.0.installer.tar.gz
          cd firefox-installer
          ./firefox-installer

But then it appears it cannot find the tar.gz...

Re: Firefox tweaks: Browse the Internet like a Google bot!

Doesnt mandrake have a nice rpm for such things?
Anyways where did you save the firefox file? You can extract it with a gui it via konqueror(kde) or file-roller(gnome) aswell(just right-click on the file). Then just click on the installer file.

Yup, but firefox comes in a tar.gz, not a rpm...

P.S.= This thread has been officially hijacked. Resistance is futile.

or, use ATOS, the Official Operating System of the Adeptus Telepathica.

Whistler 06-03-2005 01:50

Re: Firefox tweaks: Browse the Internet like a Google bot!

step by step install instructions:

1) login as root, and download this file:
http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.o...ux-i686.tar.gz
and save it to /usr/local

2) open the console and type:
# cd /usr/local
# tar xzf firefox-1.0+.en-US.linux-i686.tar.gz
# rm firefox-1.0+.en-US.linux-i686.tar.gz

3) now you can run Firefox in /usr/local/firefox/firefox. You can create a launcher or symlink on the desktop and double click it will start FF.

Question: Are GNOME or KDE (as well as applications like OpenOffice.org, AbiWord, Mozilla/Firefox, etc) designed for Server use? (GNOME and AbiWord are officially GNU software btw.)

I don't know what this is, and I googled it and found nothing... some introductions please?

there is also a free software release of MacOS (maybe the fanciest OS:)):

Sorry... its an idea a friend and I came up with a while ago. I'd had a few drinks last night.

Have any of you seen my song "ethererium"?

Does it work on x86?

Anyone know something about googlebot? Or should we just rename this topic :D

it says "Binary (PPC/x86)", but I'm now downloading it with my modem so I'm not sure

i find it quite funny to read that some people tend to 'care' about what others are using as an OS. :P

I use mighty Windows XP and i don't give a damn.... because i know how it works.

Did i try Linux? Hell yes, did i like it?.... Hell no!

As long as the most people keep using windows, linux stays safer so thank you :)

Re: Firefox tweaks: Browse the Internet like a Google bot!

I don't think I can always follow M$ as I'm tired to pay M$ each 1-2 years for an update :D What I have access to is still only Windows 98 First Edition which is already 7 years old (well, I have a copy of Windows 2000 CD but it's evaluation copy). And I also want to be able to modify & share software instead of being kept at the mercy of M$ so using GNU/Linux is the best solution for me.

I'll keep Windows 98 as a temporary workaround anyways, as sometimes I have to use it.

I don't think so, as GNU/Linux is used more on servers than Windows NT, but still safer and being cracked less than Windows ;)

and I believe unlike those proprietary programs like Windows or Opera (which just draw more users by hiding problems), the more users we have, the more bugs will be found and fixed and the faster the software will be developed.

(btw, happy birthday $eu_crey$$on!)

Rick, how do you make opera do that?

Hit F12, not sure if you can make new ones with opera though.
