Any way to identify your ram's brand?
Anyone know of a way to figure out what kind of ram you have without tearing you computer apart? I tried doing that earlier, and its label was covered by a heatsink which refused to come off. Isn't there some kind of program you can run that gives you all of your rams info?

Re: Any way to identify your ram's brand?
You can only get the info if the info is stored somewhere in the RAM card.
I don't think the info like brand of the RAM is stored. |
Re: Any way to identify your ram's brand?
There should be a sticker with a UPC code. You didn't take it off did you? That could void your warranty.

Re: Any way to identify your ram's brand?
It has a sticker but its covered by a heatshield which i can't figure out how to remove.

Re: Any way to identify your ram's brand?
What do you want to know?
The speed? Or the manufacturer? Because I think some programs can tell you the speed of the ram... sisoft sandra maybe? |
Re: Any way to identify your ram's brand?
normally there is an eprom on the ram card, so there will be some program to read it. some bios do that as well, but I think there isnt much manufacturer info, just timings and stuff

Re: Any way to identify your ram's brand?
Anyone know how to take a ram's heatshield off cause this thing ain't comin off, and i don't wanna break it. Reason i'm going through all this is because i want to buy some more ram and have it be the exact same thing as what i already have. Do you think it matters if you mix different brands of ram in the same machine if they are the same amount and speed?

Re: Any way to identify your ram's brand?
I've always mixed rams from different brands..
Nothing strange ever happened.. |
Re: Any way to identify your ram's brand?
check your bios it might say the brand
try downloading 3D mark and just goto system specs yeah you cna mix brands... i wouldn't advize it but if they are the same speen and such then it is ok |
Re: Any way to identify your ram's brand?
If you were to look at the brand on the chip, it wouldn't necessarily be the same as the manufacturer of it. Can you provide a photo of it?
Also, if you are mixing brands, I would check to see if the chips are from the same manufacturer. Like Samsung or Micron. Make sure the specs are the same, or else there will be huge problems. |

Re: Any way to identify your ram's brand?
i wouldn't mix brands unless they are they EXACT same specs... like chip arrangement, size, registered, ECC, speed
and did you say it came with a blue heat spreader on it... i can tink of a few brands that use those.... Giel, Kingston, and i think corsair does. yeah maby if you provide a picture i can compare them |
Re: Any way to identify your ram's brand?
AIDA32 is a utility free for personal use (a bit like SiSoft Sandra) that can tell you that.

Re: Any way to identify your ram's brand?
Ok, if i'm going to mix brands of ram, exactly which specs should i make sure are the same?
|
Re: Any way to identify your ram's brand?
latency is the main one... I restored my whole system before I found out about that.
|
Re: Any way to identify your ram's brand?
You mean you had fast timings set uüp in the BIOS, and your first memory stick could handle them. But when you added a second stick, you had to find out that it didn't run at such fast timigs, huh? Or did you mean something else? 'Cuz that can indeed be a problem...

Re: Any way to identify your ram's brand?
Take care of RAM type, bus speed and latency, and you're set.
|
Re: Any way to identify your ram's brand?
no, they were both nearly to0p of the range sticks, but one was more top of the range than the other. My BIOS didn't have any latency settings - something quite a few people I have spoken to find weird.

Re: Any way to identify your ram's brand?
That's indeed odd and normally something only to be found on cheaper MoBos... at least AFAIK.
|
Re: Any way to identify your ram's brand?
what is latency for ram? Could you give me an example?

Re: Any way to identify your ram's brand?
I bought some ram for my system, but i'm getting error messages about data being unable to be read from the ram, which started as soon as i stuck the new ram in. I get these messages when i play my games such as half-life 2, which causes it to shut down, and then the error message pops up. Here are my system specs:
SY-KT600 Dragon Plus v2.0 motherbaord x1 stick of 512mb pc2700 333mhz ddr ram Asylum Geforce FX 5900 128mb Audigy sound card maxtor 160gb ata133 hard drive and a western digital 40gb 450w power supply athlon xp 3000 400fsb processor Like i said earlier, i have no idea what brand the ram is but i do know how much of it i have and what speed. The stick i tried putting in was a pny ddr 512mb pc2700 333mhz. Here are some exact specs for it: Memory Size: 512MB Memory Type: PC2700 DDR Pin Configuration: 184-Pin Memory Speed: 333MHz Manufacturer: PNY Features: * Speed: 333 MHz (PC2700), compatible with 266 MHz (PC2100) * Type: 184 Pin DDR (Double Data Rate) DIMM (Dual In-line Memory Module) * Twice as fast as typical SDRAM * Built to Intel specifications * Slot(s) Required - 1 x memory - DIMM 184-pin Any ideas as to why this ram is not working in my system? I double checked my motherboards specs to make sure it could handle it, and it can. |
Re: Any way to identify your ram's brand?
I used that AIDA32 program and it turns out, the stick of ram i already have isn't pc2700, but is pc3200. I also noticed that they both had different latencies but i'm not sure it i was reading it right. The aida32 program listed the their latency as highest cas latency and 2nd highest cas latency. For the pc3200 stick i already had, the highest was 3.0 and the 2nd was 2.5. The stick i just bought was at 2.5 for highest, and 2.0 for 2nd. Now, when your looking at ram specs, it will say for example that the ram has a CAS latency of 2.5. Is it refering to the highest cas latency or the 2nd highest cas latency?
