Kruidnoten

I really missed it this year! Along with my drinking buddies -it just isn't the same in Plymouth. (I swear is 1 more person calls me "me luvver!" this week I will flip.)

Luckily my father sent me a couple of bags.

Re: Kruidnoten

It is like papernoten, but nicer. We always used to call it all papernoten.

Small brown biscuity things with some spekelaus spice in it, that gets pelted at high velocity at small children by "zwarte petes".

HangFire 15-12-2004 06:26

Re: Kruidnoten

So.. "Kruidnoten" is some kind of special event where all the "zwarte petes" throw brownies at kids?

I know I'm taking this completely out of context, but I can't help but laugh at this.

Lol... sounds like.
”Peper nooten en Zwarte pieten ...”

nothing beats our christmas chocolates...

*edit* ah yes. Christmas beer.

Exilibur 15-12-2004 17:24

Re: Kruidnoten

Christmas beer indeed... as long as it isn't too sweet.

somebody should make a beer topic.

Cpl. Shrike 15-12-2004 17:29

Re: Kruidnoten

Or just turn this one into beer fest. :|

Leagle 15-12-2004 18:58

Re: Kruidnoten

I have seen it spelt paper as well as peper. Much nicer than "christmas beer". "Black Peters" do throw things at you, but they aren't brownies -brownies are not biscuity unless the fool baker put concrete in the mixture.

Those crazy Europeans and their secret brownie clubs. North America needs something like that, that nobody else can understand.

Exilibur 16-12-2004 00:05

Re: Kruidnoten

YEAH! Europe is _all_ about secret brownie societies! :D

You can't try explaining it? Is it like a bake sale, or do you trade baked goods or what?

It's a folk tradition.
And one of the favorite parts for the kids is when the zwarte pieten throw the kruidnoten at the kids. :D

Yes. I already said, but I don't think they understand. We get biscuits and sweets thrown at us very hard, by the servants of St. Nick.

I FOUND IT! I FOUND IT! I FOUND IT! I FOUND IT! I FOUND IT! I FOUND IT! I FOUND IT! I FOUND IT! I FOUND IT! I FOUND IT!

there it's not Santa who brings presents to children, it's St Nicholas, he was a bishop or something if I remember right. He gives oranges and stuff to children but only to those who behaved well. The bad kids though, are being chased and hit by a sort of old psychopath dressed in black. It happens on St Nicholas day. I bet that's what they're talking about.

I R l33t!!!1!11 :D

Re: Kruidnoten

L337. :P

Yup. Well if you behave you also get the goodies from the psychopath
The Psychpath can do good or bad.
However hes not dressed in black but hes black.... Zwate pieten are color fully dressed.(al sorts of myths of why hes black the most inocent is that hes black going through shimneys. to bring the presents unseen to the kids shoes... yes the gifts are being put in the shoe.)
In worst cases if yr not behaved you'll be put in a sack and transported to spain.

I've found a good resource on this crazy thing.

After reading the entire site (looking at pictures), I fainally understand the true meaning of Kruidnoten.

Re: Kruidnoten

It is all similar. He is a Cardinal I think, but who cares? You leave a carrot and water for his horse in a shoe, and he gives gifts akin to stocking stuff. Instead of coal, bad children get taken away to Spain by him. (Where he lives, the whole catholic issue.)
