Re: HL2 -Which One Will You Get?
I'm interested in HL1:Source... just to see
|
Re: HL2 -Which One Will You Get?
I'm not going to pay for it until after a couple of years when the price drops. The "Collector's" edition costs about $120 CDN. Ridiculous.
Gaming has become waaay to expensive for me. |
Re: HL2 -Which One Will You Get?
Word! If Hl2 is a good game, it will survive the test of time. I just don't spend 40 or 50 Euros (50-60 US-$ atm) for a friggin' computer game, no way. Besides, I don't need no stupid HL2 hat (it might as well be labeled: "Hello, I'm a computer geek, don't take me seriously") or other paraphernalia. And last but not least, I won't install Steam again - never ever. If the choice comes down to "no steam - no HL2" or "HL2 plus Steam", I'm gonna skip HL2 completely.

Re: HL2 -Which One Will You Get?
you cant have hl2 without steam.
|
Re: HL2 -Which One Will You Get?
Ok, then no HL2.
|
Re: HL2 -Which One Will You Get?
Yeah of course it'll have Steam, but that doesn't mean that you'll have to let Steam access the net and go through all the usual bull. Valve couldn't be stupid enough to make the game online only. Well, actually, knowing Valve I wouldn't put it past them.
Launching a game through Steam is allright, but when you have to log in, update things, etc etc then it fast becomes a headache. |
Re: HL2 -Which One Will You Get?
Well, you know, in the end my PC was at a point where it refused to boot normally while Steam was installed. I had frequent crashes and shutdowns even without running Steam. All those problems disappeared when I finally uninstalled and deleted all Steam-related stuff, and my PC has been back to normal since then.
You guys do whatever you want, but I won't install Steam ever again. It's had its chance (many, many chances, in fact), but no... thanks. |
Re: HL2 -Which One Will You Get?
first i think they fixed most bugs..
second.. if you buy retail.. you shouldnt need steam at all.. unless you want to upgrade.. |
Re: HL2 -Which One Will You Get?
that's what I understand too. I don't think they will force you to install Steam, at least as long as you don't want to go multiplayer or upgrade like TruB says.
|
Re: HL2 -Which One Will You Get?
Ahh... that would be good news indeed. I just had a look at recently uploaded screenshots, and I gotta say it looks more than nice. Very realistic level design and great atmosphere.

Re: HL2 -Which One Will You Get?
Heyyo,
I'd go for standard edition. N' as for hl2 no steam? I'm sure that steamlessproject site will think of something. As long as you buy the game, it's morally ok I say. :) And as for HL1: source, I diddn't hear aboot it at all untill you mentioned it huntkillaz. Is it HL1 singleplayer campaign maps just converted to HL2 Graphics, etc? So I'm guessing for HL1: source, you could get it online through steam, just like HL1 n' opposing forces? |

Re: HL2 -Which One Will You Get?
My guess is that the retail boxed store versions of the game will have options provided by the installer application, such as:
1. Install into current Steam installation, for those who already have Steam running. 2. Install the Steam core so the game may be run, but no Steam functionality as far as multiplayer support goes. 3. Install all of Steam (not meaning all the currently supported games, just all of Steam with SP and MP functionality) and the game. |
Re: HL2 -Which One Will You Get?
steam sucks majorly
|
Re: HL2 -Which One Will You Get?
I think I have an idea..
what if we just licence the engine like that other company and just make our own game using the engine without steam :D |
Re: HL2 -Which One Will You Get?
Like that new game from Troika, Vampire Bloodlines.
|
Re: HL2 -Which One Will You Get?
Heyyo,
That should be a good one. I think it's the first HL2 mod that had a news release to the world... unless I missed the CS: Source one news release... I tried vampires: the masquerade, n' that's pretty cool, hopefully this sequel's al the more better. ;) |
Re: HL2 -Which One Will You Get?
Have fun coughing up the thousands of dollars to license Source. :P
|
Re: HL2 -Which One Will You Get?
dream on guys ;) there WILL be steam. In every package, on every installation. Why?
Because steam is integrated... big time. And a second good reason: So they can splash up 'new mods for HL 2' every time yo ustart that damn program to earn more money... yay. STEAM is the ultimate 'marketing strategy' for Valve. They don't need a distributor. They just send you the bytes and you send the dollars/euro's. Simple, and more profit for Valve. (ie, same data but more money ratio). Besides, in STEAM there are dll's which are used in every HL/HL2 game now. You should try to run a game from Steam without it. Ie, remove STEAM core or whatever and try to run HL.exe and such, ie, the counter-strike directory in the steamapps; this EXE file is not like the 'normal' hl.exe file you would run to have it standalone. Either way; STEAM will be in, period ;) |
Re: HL2 -Which One Will You Get?
Heyyo,
Yeah, I'm not too big of a steam fan myself, but hey, sometimes you just gotta suck in that gut, n' just live with it. Cause most non-steam versions are illegal anywho, n' I can live with little popups... as long as they don't start filling steam with ads, I'll keep using it with some content. And for the friends list? I stopped using that like, a few months ago, it's useless cause you get booted all the time. Me n' me buds just fire up good ol' xfire. it does the job, no complaints here. :) If you don't have xfire, I suggest you get it. It allows you to join any mp game a friend's playing on by just 1 click of a button. It supports many games. HL, CS, Far Cry, Doom3, Quake3, BF1942, etc. MANY games. Plus now if you've gotta bud in TS, you can jump onto their TS server with a button click too... but it doesn't support leaping into channels, n' channels with passwords yet. Heh, I kindof feel like I'm now spamming aboot xfire, but it's good. :P http://www.xfire.com/xf/index.php |
Re: HL2 -Which One Will You Get?
sounds alot like all seeing eye..
never used steam.. but i dont think it will be a problem when ever i get my hands on hl2..its evolution.. and as MarD said.. non steam version is illegal.. i bet if someone only want to play offline there will be som nonsteam version to get.. i would choose the hack version if i only wanne plan singplayer.. but now im looking forward to mods so i just hope steam wont be a pain in the butt.. |
Re: HL2 -Which One Will You Get?
Heyyo,
As long as you don't need to get the updates for HL2 mods through steam? it'll be ok. Cause I think we all remember what happened when they just started up steam, don't we? :P Yeah, but don't you have to pay for all seeing eye? xfire's free. ;) |

3 words... hack and crack..
not me.. i got BB.. |
Re: HL2 -Which One Will You Get?
Hmm... now what's true? Do you login ONCE and that's it? Or does Steam start automatically every time you boot up your PC and connects to Valve to authenticate / register or whatever it is?
Anyway, it's sufficient for me if Steam needs to be installed because the last time I had it freshly installed, it made my PC crash (not during an update or a game, not because of a temporarily f*cked up Valve server, just because it was installed and got loaded). Besides, it's not necessary. I see Steam more as a marketing platform than anything else. So the equation stays simple for me: HL2 - Steam = buy when it's cheap enough HL2 + Steam = no, thanks. |
Re: HL2 -Which One Will You Get?
Heyyo,
Well, dude, you only need steam to be installed once to authenticate your cd key, n' copy of HL2. After that, you can get rid of steam. But I also heard rumors while playing some CS: Source, that let's say you bought just the bronze package, n' you wanted to play HL1: Source, you'd need to actually PAY to download it! Harsh eh? So yeah, TWrecks, you're entirely right aboot Steam, it's a big marketing ploy... n' I hate it even more every time I learn more aboot how deep the rabbit hole goes. (Heh, steam is like the matrix.. Full of secrets, n' ploys :P) But this may be just rumors, so maybe it's the truth? oh well, only time will tell I guess... BTW, if you preloaded your copies of HL2 n' stuff on steam, you can dl CS: Source, the retail version n' play it now. So that's pretty cool, but how "conveinient" that they're holding back the retail versions of the game until this little quarrel between sierra n' vivenda is sovled eh? So us people who wanna buy the boxed versions have to wait something like, 1-2 months maybe... also maybe just rumors... I think..... |

Re: HL2 -Which One Will You Get?

Now I'm feeling left out cuz I'm poor :( |
