I am gonna make my own repetoire for music... what do ya say?

I made this song, 4:13 long, 6MB MP3, on pure improvisation. Its sort of futuristic, fantasy like. And i actually like it very much, i call it:

Stairway to void

Let me know what you think about it, i am thinking of making my own instrumental songs.. perhaps i should buy some music maker ;)

Btw, recommended to turn volume up , surround on and just easy listening! :D

Wow!
You need to sell that to a motion picture company, it has movie soundtrack written all over it. "Original Soundtrack Composed by Stefan Hendriks"
I use Cubase 2.0 but Pro Tools on Mac is the industry standard. There are plenty of free sequencers out there too. Then you could add some drums from a drum machine...

stefanhendriks 18-06-2004 22:36

Re: I am gonna make my own repetoire for music... what do ya say?

lol, well it was just improvisation. Is it that good? nah :)

Good for what it is!
Do you take your music seriously?

stefanhendriks 18-06-2004 23:19

Re: I am gonna make my own repetoire for music... what do ya say?

of course! I am in a band and experimenting with this Korg digital piano for some time now. WHen i have a good music studio i will make other songs for sure. I just need a mood and a course. :)

i like this song, for a starter.

I just went to a red bull seminar on record distribution and a demo of final scratch tonight. They also showed a video about the red bull music academy which is in Rome this year! http://www.redbullmusicacademy.com/

Re: I am gonna make my own repetoire for music... what do ya say?

hmmm. honestly? i am just the random guy, so maybe my opinion has no actual value at all, but it didnt look amateurish at all to me. In fact, i do think it could perfectly fit as a movie soundtrack. It could very well have been done by pro (but once again i'm pretty much ignorant here). Sincere congratulations anyway.

Re: I am gonna make my own repetoire for music... what do ya say?

thanks a lot! I am going to continue on this track , i am also taking lessons (again). this time to improve the technique skills.

I already thought of a name (nickname), @Dawn

I also have searched for good gfx for a 'cd cover' which would fit my 'needs'. I am trying to get a 2nd song , i got a sketch already.

Now i'm searching for a good Music Maker (and not to expensive!) so i can assemble my songs as i want it for 100%.

Actually i have made something my own, very simple... but perhaps could be refined here and there. However, i DO like SIMPLE yet EFFECTIVE. Here are shots of the covers... front and back.

Sorry for the big downloads btw (600k each)

I have resized them to 800x600 (they are better quality on my HD):

Re: I am gonna make my own repetoire for music... what do ya say?

rofl, Stefan already sees himself as the new Elton John :D

is that the same tune you made me listen to ?

Quite cool, but personally I don't like the style. Soft. Weepy. Girlish. Bah ;)

nah, I won't beg for an autograph :P

stefanhendriks 20-06-2004 00:30

Re: I am gonna make my own repetoire for music... what do ya say?

lol. No. I don't like Elthon John at all hehe. So don't compare me with that :D

Anyway, what you have heard is different from this song as this song was recorded/made up/etc in 15 minutes and the piece you heard was the very first test i made.

THere is not much to do atm but recording soft stuff. Untill i get myself a good drumcomputer (software) and a music maker... then we'll be talking :D

Re: I am gonna make my own repetoire for music... what do ya say?

nice chord progression it is nice. I Agree with Dead bwoy it does sound like a motion picture song. If you wrote this live (You physically played it with pure improv), i sing VERY high praise.

Re: I am gonna make my own repetoire for music... what do ya say?

Fruity Loops? Sounds like a breakfast cereal... :D

Hey stefan, just listened to your piece, and actually I hadn't expected it to be that good. Look, I normally like Rock & Metal, and in most cases I hate songs that are composed on a keyboard because they tend to sound sterile, symmetrical, lifeless, boring and constructed, whereas songs composed on a guitar sound more organic and natural, IMHO. Now your song IS somehow constructed and far from exciting, and I sure wouldn't listen to more than 10 minutes of that style the way I prefer to listen to music: volume up, eyes closed, full focus on the music and then take a plunge into soundscapes. But as some others said, it makes a good background music; maybe for a movie indeed. Of course for a scene that has nothing to do with action... An entire CD like this might be nice if you want to spend some time caressing & smooching your GF as if there were no tomorrow... nice, really. 9_9

Your CD cover idea is nice, but I don't like the back cover. Just inverted colours, nah! And I'd keep that "@" out of the name. It just looks too geekish. You could as well add a sticker "from the maker of RealBot" - both wouldn't really help to support the atmosphere you want to create with your music. Coder Ambient, hehe... :P
Oh, and since the cover image is so symmetrical, you might consider putting the name right in the middle, too, or make it a bit smaller and/or a bit translucent, so as not to destroy the symmetry of the cover.
[/nagging frenzy]
But all in all, a nice start! Thumbs up. ;)

Btw, do you like stuff like the Unreal soundtrack? I got some MOD (STM, S3M etc.) files on an archive CD - mostly from the early 90's, and I really love some of that stuff.

stefanhendriks 20-06-2004 16:25

Re: I am gonna make my own repetoire for music... what do ya say?

Actually i like to go in some sort of Jean Michael Jarre style (its a frenchman so PMB should know him... ;)).. I have been to a concert of him when i was 15 and i am still impressed. I do intend to do more fast paced numbers, but id on't have the software or materials to create such a thing. I also just do things as i like. I don't want to force myself on writing something. I already figured out that it won't work.

About the cover, i think it should be like "at" (in small) and then Dawn bigger. Perhaps AT should be cursive too. anyway, its just a sketch :)

I downloaded a free music maker thingy, but it keeps on crashing and its to messy to work with. I jus thave to wait for the real thing :)

Zacker 21-06-2004 15:48

Re: I am gonna make my own repetoire for music... what do ya say?

I really like the track. I agree with most others regarding that it would fit very well as soundtrack for a movie. I doubt I would buy a whole CD with this kind of music.

Loose the @Dawn, its far from cool. I think Stefan Hendriks would be fine:)

stefanhendriks 22-06-2004 14:44

Re: I am gonna make my own repetoire for music... what do ya say?

i don't want to be on a cd with my name on it like that.. hmm. anyone has a better suggestion?

Re: I am gonna make my own repetoire for music... what do ya say?

Yes

"The Finishing Touch Of God"

:P

no kidding, I think thats a great name :D

>BKA< T Wrecks 22-06-2004 23:25

Re: I am gonna make my own repetoire for music... what do ya say?

Sounds too religious for my taste. Why not "Stefan Hendriks" like "Chris Hülsbeck" or "Jean-Michel Jarré" ? Or "Elton John"? :P
Well, you go ahead and write some songs until you have enough material together for a CD or at least a demo - chances are that in the meantime something will have influenced or inspired you - something at which you could allude with your "band" name.

Do you know the band "Zimmer's Hole"? Quite a unique name, but if you know the story behind... *shudder* Nonetheless, they took a stupid idea and turned it into a band name you won't find anywhere else on this planet. Of course, it's kind of a fun name, and you'll want something more serious...

TruB 22-06-2004 23:50

Re: I am gonna make my own repetoire for music... what do ya say?

how about .. "no waypoint" or maybe "blue ladders".. "inspired" has release another smashing album again created by the mysterious Stefan Hendrix who finally diceded to tell the world hes gay.. i mean finally happy with his songs..

Re: I am gonna make my own repetoire for music... what do ya say?

that is a truelly buetiful sound track, it suits a film, or even a play. more music plz, and the @dawn not a good idea, makes it look too geekish

stefanhendriks 23-06-2004 08:58

Re: I am gonna make my own repetoire for music... what do ya say?

ty again. In fact when i listen to it, i think i can do much better, but i need the materials for it.. Still waiting for them ..

anyway perhaps Stefan Hendriks is not bad at all. Or just change the KS in to X as it also looks l33t.. the same pronounciation though:

Stefan Hendrix

lol

Or

St3f4n H3ndr!x

Hehe, yeah... you can only call yourself "Hendrix" if you can play the electric piano with your tongue... ;) but don't get it wedged in between two keys! :D

Re: I am gonna make my own repetoire for music... what do ya say?

oh well, if it's about finding you a nickname, make a contest :)

I liked "dawn" in @Dawn but clearly the @ sucks...
and "dawn" alone sucks too
maybe "something" at dawn would do
or something "of" dawn
something sentimental, anyway...

secrets of dawn
glimmer of dawn

or more girlish

knights of dawn
flowers at dawn

hmm no
lets forget the something at dawn
that doesnt make it, really :D

*edit*

hmm wait
maybe there are anagrams for "stefan hendriks"
lemme check...

dan's feet shrink
as ed fern thinks
fat dr. ken shines
ask nerd fen shit
deaf hern stinks

bah
that doesnt look like that could do it either >:(
I'm giving up
sorry :P

Re: I am gonna make my own repetoire for music... what do ya say?

Like Dead Bwoy said. Motion Picture - just picture Highlander or Last of the Mohicans having that run to it.

I've got all sides of the plate covered I am an avid CS'er, I've been using Realbot for a while and I used to be a musician.

You can go to 210.23.137.32:27015 for a go dedicated go against my trained Realbots, and 210.23.137.32:9080/stats for the obvious.

Quick note. I've noticed that since I installed the latest WIP for Linux My Bots are so much smarter. As an example Aim_map both 50% of the time teams of Bots would run to center backwards, until they crossed then attack.

Now they spin from the beginning and Rape me a bit more! Except something that needs a bit of a fix, is that when FF is on (as it is on my server) the Bots don't give a rats, as they just keep firing. I reckon I have gone down to TK's at least 20% of the time.
Keep up the good work, Music and otherwise. Cheers

Re: I am gonna make my own repetoire for music... what do ya say?

stefan, I don't know what software you will end up using, but I like you do some "for fun" composing with keyboard, and I use all-freeware/shareware software. For a recording software, I use a program called "DDClip Pro" that works rather well for its class. It is not nearly as professional as something like Acid or Protools, but it is far less expensive.

A good drum machine is a program called "leafdrums". I don't know the URL for it, but google should find it. It is shareware, but there is no restriction on anything. It comes with a standard drum set but you can use whatever wav sounds you record as "drums", and it has up to 64th beat resolution. Not bad for free software! The interface is a little confusing at start but you get used to it.

Hope this might help, and good luck with your composing career!

Jonathan

I made a song a few days back, its 12 minutes long. When i heard it back, i thought "sounds good, but waaaaay to long and waayyyy to boring"... And , the MP3 file is also really large. Perhaps i will mix the samples into something 'less boring' to let you guys hear about it :D
