Random Ideas
google://<search string here>
OK, mozilla supports something similar (keyword:<search string>), but it should be an actual protocol, available as a IE/netscape plugin. I've seen one for 'steam://' to connect to a steam server. google:// should be next. |
Re: Random Ideas
You mean it's not?!
If I want to search for "tennis rackets" (example...) all I have to type into my Internet Explorer address bar is "google tennis rackets" :D (I can probably post a regfile that makes this work for you too :)) |

Alright... With this regfile, you gain the following quick-search functions:
Syntax: quicksearch_word topic you want info on |
Re: Random Ideas
That is a very good idea, dstruct2k! I'll borrow your google hack right away :)
*edit* it works great... but it doesn't take accentuated characters :( For example if I type "google déplacer fenêtre C++" it comes up with a search for "d?placer fen?tre c" |
Re: Random Ideas
very usefull!
Thanx! |
Re: Random Ideas
Why don't you just use Opera? There's a search bar right next to the address bar by default, and I can just select where and what to search (google, msn, eBay, amazon.com, download.com, google groups, mp3/audio, alltheweb, lycos, etc. from a drop-down list, enter anything there (supports special characters) and there I go. I've never plyed around with that, but I'm sure it's customizable.

Re: Random Ideas
because Opera isn't as tightly integrated with Windows as Internet Explorer is ... :)
Having two browsers on the same machine would clutter things up and be more of a source of problems than an actual advantage, IMO |
Re: Random Ideas
I can't confirm that from my own experience. I have Opera and IE on my internet machine, and I even surf the web using both of them at the same time sometimes - IE for secure and trustworthy sites, Opera for others (due to its easily customizable and generally better security features). You can import your IE favourites (which I don't use) into Opera automatically, and the only question you have to decide is which browser to associate HTML files with, if you have some saved on your HD.
To be precise, if it weren't for the insanely high integration of IE and Windows, I wouldn't use IE at all. But some programs -even some which have nothing or hardly anything to do with the web- require IE, and besides there are some crappy sites out there that aren't programmed according to valid and widely agreed programming standards, thus only working with IE. That's the only reason why I kept it. But I have never experienced any problems due to the coexistence of IE and Opera on my machine. Or could you state an example? Maybe I just don't recognize them...? |
Re: Random Ideas
Well, these were just the examples I was about to mention...
Insanely high integration, indeed... And I don't like the idea of using two hammers for the same nail. If I can live at the expense of a few extra features such as the search bar and keep only one browser to do the job, I'll stick with IE... |
Re: Random Ideas
I don't trust IE enough to use it for any site...
I've been infected with spyware and adware so many times because of some stupid IE exploit some advertisers use.. I even keep up to date with IE updates and I still get infected.. Thats why I got Firefox... |
Re: Random Ideas
Word! I've been virus-free as long as I can think, virtually spam-free as long as I have mail (ca. 20 spam mails in 3 1/2 years), absolutely spyware-free, trojan-free and popup-free since I use Opera, SpyBot and antivirus & firewall software. And I spend pretty much time online. That alone makes me avoid IE, Outlook & the like, but of course that's not to say that I want to put down anyone who uses IE. After all, each advantage you get comes at the expense of aomething else... it's a magic triangle made up of the three points security, compatibility and ease of use - where between these three points you find your "hot spot" is an utterly individual decision.

Re: Random Ideas
that search tool thingy worked for a little while, until I started getting all sorts of random errors I'd never seen before. I removed it and everything's AOK! Was this designed for XP?

Re: Random Ideas
you can't use the mouse wheel with opera!?!?!?
how can you guys stand that??? |
Re: Random Ideas
NO NO NO! Of course you can use the mouse wheel in Opera!!! You can even perform many more so-called "mouse gestures" (a bit like in the game "Black & White") to perform various tasks (fully customizable)!
IE can't do this, and I wanted to say that going back from Opera to IE must feel like going back from a wheel mouse to a normal one - you'll desperately scratch the mouse where the wheel used to be... |
