netsky.z

Look out for the netsky.z virus. I have already received 3 copies.

Re: netsky.z

:D I receive about 10 netsky, 5 beagle and one or two sasser -- daily :D
the funniest part is that some of them come from an email address that belongs to somebody I *know*... but it's obviously not their fault... the viruses harvest email addresses in address books and send themselves randomly with forged From: addresses from these.
One week a certain meister @ telus.net was keeping sending me 4 or 5 viruses a day. It's botmeister's address! (but it's not him) ;)
And another day I got a virus from pm@racc-ai.com delivered to pm@bots-united.com, rofl :D

i got some mails from my very old e-mail adress (which does not even exist anymore!) with virusses. Very annoying.

Re: netsky.z

I have just received some "message undeliverable" e-mails in my old weimz2001@yahoo.co.kr email box, but I haven't been using that address for quite a long time :)

an email virus only?.. i havent seen anything yet..
trust norton and dont use outlook..

>BKA< T Wrecks 14-05-2004 12:23

Re: netsky.z

Yup, I never used Outlook, my mail addy isn't published everywhere, my mail provider is multiple test winner and has good protection, and my OS is Win98 - all in all, a good package. I don't get any spam, and most viruses nowadayd only attack Win2k/XP. :)

Cpl. Shrike 14-05-2004 16:48

Re: netsky.z

Yes that's one way of avoiding viruses.

Use an ancient OS :D

>BKA< T Wrecks 14-05-2004 20:01

Re: netsky.z

So what - as long as it works? As long as I could run CS on it, I would run an ancient Babylonian OS on my PC... :D Provided I wouldn't have to chisel all my texts into stone blocks, of course. But that's about the only objection I have. ;)

Cpl. Shrike 14-05-2004 21:08

Re: netsky.z

Aaww didn't mean to bash yr system.
It was mere a comment on using win98 cos of the viruses. :)
While yr totaly not save most viruses work on any win32 os and well yes true most for outlook.

Re: netsky.z

Don't worry, Shrike. I didn't understand your comment in any negative way. :) Besides, you could "bash" Win98 as much as you want - I would bash with you, because it sure has plenty of weaknesses and disadvantages (who would know that better than me?). Funny enough that one of its its few advantages (being "protected" against many viruses) springs from the mere fact that it's just... well, as you said, "ancient" now. There's some nice irony in M$ products beginning to show their positive sides when they are getting obsolete... 9_9
Hehe, I agree: "Downgrading" to Win98 just because of viruses would indeed be a strange approach... why not WfW 3.11, then? :D Peace!

stefanhendriks 14-05-2004 22:50

Re: netsky.z

downgrading to win 3.11 is not even that weird. There are sets of WIN32 tools so you can run most WIN 95 apps on it even....

well, directx and such wont probably work :D

I offer twelve packs of beer (x50) to the guy who shows me a Half-Life screenshot running under Windows 3.11 *grin* :P

Re: netsky.z

... there is still MS-DOS 6.21 installed on my computer :D

And I think Linux/FreeBSD has few virus - but they are just difficult to install and I have tried once but I have nearly lost all the data on my HD :(

I have heard there's Windows Emulator for Linux, but I don't think that can support 3D games like Half-Life in hardware accelerate mode.

Re: netsky.z

Whistler actually it can support a lot of games...
and Half-life is one of them..
so is Starcraft..

that's Win32s, but it doesn't make you "can run most Win95 apps on it" but "a few Win95 apps" :) all the apps compiled with MSVC 4.0 or later isn't supports on Win32s.

No, MS Paint.

Re: netsky.z

Yes wine for linux does an excelent job.
It can play steam / half-life tour of duty / day of defeat.
It's an hell installing/configuring it.
But opengl is possible on linux running half-life

sPlOrYgOn 15-05-2004 16:43

Re: netsky.z

yea i completely screwed up my wine and i dunno how to fix it :(

Cpl. Shrike 15-05-2004 18:41

Re: netsky.z

Yes did that to a couple times.
I'd just remove it and install the wine rpm again.

First thing after install wine I copy all the files form the winXP system and system32 folder to the wine system folder.
Then a trail and error on wich dlls to use native and wich from wine.
I Then usualy install IExplore and ms office to set the most dlls and compatiblity for other windows programs.

But it's always a pain to do. Costs lotsa time and effort.

Re: netsky.z

i tried installing winex and messed everything up...
I'm not sure what to do anymore..
Theres an older version of wine in the Mandrake 10 cd but I tried installing a newer version of wine using an rpm thats given from the wine site.
Doesn't really matter now..
I'm going to try and just dual boot with win98 when i get the time to.

hmmm.... it seems it's time for me to throw away this Win2000 trial version which takes 5 minutes to boot up and switch to Linux now.

And the name of that Mozilla's browser really changes too much - I remember at first it's "Phoenix".

Re: netsky.z

Hehe, apparently that's true. Just read funny things like "I'm using FireFox, but I have a FireBird icon" and "FireFox with FireFox icon" etc. in a different thread... maybe they should really make up their minds. Or what will come next? FlameHorse? LavaSheep? VolcanoGoose? Hopefully they won't change Opera to "Musical" or "Symphony" in any version to come... ;)

Pierre-Marie Baty 16-05-2004 22:23

Re: netsky.z

They changed FireBird to FireFox because FireBird was a registered trade mark already owned by another company, if I remember well.

Re: netsky.z

Ok, that's a good enough reason for a name change.

On the other hand, the trouble involved with changing product names all the time is a good enough reason to do some research BEFORE giving your product a certain name... 9_9
