Physics Library..

PMB recommended creating a thread like this, so i took decided to do it. Discuss physics libraries and stuff here, leave the engine thread specifically to discuss the engine. Thanks :)

Re: Physics Library..

yeah... Frosty pointed out the ODE (Open Dynamics Engine) at SourceForge

http://opende.sourceforge.net

Very interesting at first sight, although I wonder if you guys know alternatives ?

Re: Physics Library..

The upcoming tactical shooter "soldner" uses the opende physics engine, have a look at http://soldner.jowood.com/?RubrikIde...r=1033&lang=en

Re: Physics Library..

soldner looks great, graphically speaking, that something we should aim towards :)

Although i would like to see how the physics look on it :)

doesn't OpenDE already have a skeletal animation library ? or maybe I skimmed it ?

It appears so..

http://ode.org/slides/slide3.html

it does say the SDK CAN simulate humans, but there are no examples of this.

Re: Physics Library..

What I mean is that you need an animation library for it to control, don't you?

FrostyCoolSlug 08-06-2004 00:41

Re: Physics Library..

erm.. yea lol, for example walking, needs something solid for animation that goes along with physics :)

Pierre-Marie Baty 08-06-2004 22:30

Re: Physics Library..

I would tend to think it's implemented in the library, no ?

FrostyCoolSlug 09-06-2004 00:22

Re: Physics Library..

i was refering to the library

Re: Physics Library..

Nice parabolic bullet drop would be nice, as would having to actually 'lead' targets, rather than HL's current 'Point and Shoot' predictive techniques.

Re: Physics Library..

Agreed, gravity effects bullets like it effects people, the further away someone is, the harder it is to hit them, If you fire straight up, you better move, else the bullets gonna come straight back down and cap you >:P

Re: Physics Library..

wind?

FrostyCoolSlug 10-06-2004 17:21

Re: Physics Library..

i _think_ wind is possibly going a bit over the top.. not sure, i'll let others comment on it :p

Brainz 11-06-2004 01:33

Re: Physics Library..

well, wind is normally recreated by enlarging the firecone, as it rarely blows in a constant direction with constant speed. Add that to parabolic bullet drop & a high enough skybox... Indirect fire with rifles. Interesting. Just need HE bullets, and you'd have minature artilliary.

TruB 11-06-2004 09:12

Re: Physics Library..

well.. if there is not wind.. you dont shoot straight anyways.. if its not an sniper.. i dontthink the chanse of getting hit if you shoot one shoot up is small as a million to one.. if not more..

Sorry, that didnt make too much sence to me, can you reiterate please?

darn it, i had seen a link with physics and 'softbody' reaction. Its more smooth then ragg-droll.. (did i spell this right?) :D

its meqon and havoc i know about..

looks good....
too bad its not free :(

FrostyCoolSlug 16-07-2004 06:12

Re: Physics Library..

yea, all the really good physics libs arnt free, maybe we should keep discussion to libraries that are free and open source? although other suggestions are nice, at the end of the day, we want the game to be open source, and to do that, we cant use any comercial software.
