Fun thread - your favourite bot names...
I think it's time for a new fun thread here, although it's actually not too far off topic: What are your favourite bot names? Do you follow the example of old PODBot and give'em names (or nicks) of friends & people you know? Do you like stupid or nonsense names? Or do you prefer them to be serious (whatever that may be...)?
I like names that are funny, but not totally stupid. For example, I wouldn't name a bot "Asshole" or something like that... I prefer names that make you laugh if you know what's behind them; names with allusions in them. Can you think of funny ones? Maybe we can start a contest and see who's got the best idea... I'll open the contest with "Tal Rusher"... :D how's that? Or would you prefer "Sir Campalot" ? |
Re: Fun thread - your favourite bot names...
cant think of any cs bots names right now.. but when worms 1 was out i always gave them names that began with fluff.. so fluff fluffer fluffi.. and so on..
|
Re: Fun thread - your favourite bot names...
lmao @ Sir Campalot
I used to call my first bots funny names too, like James Bonk or Barbie Turics Once I named them all with dead presidents' names, that was hilarious :D |
Re: Fun thread - your favourite bot names...
Well, I couldn't stand reading the names of Count Floyd, DaTa etc. anymore, although some of those nicks are just stylish. Killaruna, for example, or Rambotnic.
James Bonk... *ROFL* good one indeed - but I don't get the gag in "Barbie Turics"... ???:( I always keep a list of nice names, and when I wake up at 4 o'clock in the night and a funny name occurs to me, I write it down and add it to the list the next day. But it's amazing how the most obvious puns can escape you for months - I didn't come up with BotZilla (a real bad and very easy one) until some weeks ago. At that time, I already had one called Leonardo DiCapribot... (twice the fun to shoot, hehe...) @ TruB: Man, you're right - Worms was another one of those "funny names" games. I gave my worms the names of musicians in bands I liked... 9_9 |

word ;)

Re: Fun thread - your favourite bot names...
http://www.m-w.com/cgi-bin/dictionar...&va=barbituric
"Barbie" is a shortened version for "Barbara" and this bot was configured to use a female player model... and barbiturics are dangerous chemical medicine which is actually the first used means of suicide for women - eating pills of barbiturics makes you stunned and fall asleep, and in most cases you don't wake up :) Perhaps I shouldn't joke with these matters in fact... :) |
Re: Fun thread - your favourite bot names...
Aaaah, NOW I see... wow, that's a name I like... some thought behind - although this time too much thought for me :P
You know, my stupid brain keeps coming up with nonsense. Yesterday when I went to bed, for some reason I thought about the whole CS business and the ppl here, Austin among them. Thus I came to think of Austin Powers (The Spy Who Shagged Me), and my brain immediately comes up with a bot name: The Guy Who Fragged Me... i can't help it. It's stronger than me... :D |
Re: Fun thread - your favourite bot names...
when i used realbot back in the day i had a bot called AeroDynamicFlyingPenis
|
Re: Fun thread - your favourite bot names...
o_O WTF... I wouldn't want to be shot by a guy called like this, that's for sure! :D
But a friend of mine removed another bot name from my botnames.txt because he couldn't stand being fragged by Leonardo DiCapribot... 9_9 Btw: You resurrected an ancient thread! :P |

Re: Fun thread - your favourite bot names...
yeah, that's almost the bump of the trimester :D
Currently I have my bots named after heroes from the Iliad by Homer (not the dumb jackass you see on TV heh, the true Homer :D) so there are Hektor, Priamos, Odysseus, Agamemnon, Polydamas, Nestor, etc... and the bot chat files are all exerpts from the Iliad itself :D its quite fun (Hektor planted the bomb.) Odysseus: Hektor, thou art strong but not wise, and I dare thou to defy Achilles and his iron shield Hektor: Dare I will, as true as Apollon protects me my steel will crush his skull ! (Achilles: Need backup.) Odysseus: from Ithake surrounded by the vast seas I will follow thou everywhere, Achilles. Nestor: Argians, and you all, Akhaians with the bloody armors, hear my wisdom, let the fierce Hektor come and die, for in this trap he will fall for the price of his folly Odysseus: Hektor, Zeus from over the clouds will strike thy father and thou in terror, thou will fall and thy weapons will sound below thou. (the bomb has been defused) (Hektor killed Odysseus with a headshot from xm1014) |
Re: Fun thread - your favourite bot names...
its my job to resurect old posts god isnt here anymore so he cant close em LOL

Re: Fun thread - your favourite bot names...
Now that's a quite unique idea for botchat! However, aren't some of these entries a tad too long? Or has the botchat been changed to support longer lines? I seem to remember that there was a certain limit...
The next interesting project in that vein would be a sound pack that's really different from standard - like instead of "report in, team" "o brother, where art thou?" :D |
Re: Fun thread - your favourite bot names...
yeah right, well I couldn't post a real log and I couldn't remember the exact sentences either (which are in old french btw), so I forged a translation for the dialog - but what I posted does resemble what's going on here ;)
the limit is 128 chars, btw |
Re: Fun thread - your favourite bot names...
Hmm... old French... is that very different from modern French? I'd like to know because in German, it's VERY different. In English, well... kind of. But in Spanish, it's really similar. If you can read Spanish, you can read many medieval texts because it has not changed very much. Of course, the vocabulary tends to be a bit problematic... *cough* ;)
Btw, ins't it fascinating to see how threads trail off-topic and eventually develop into a discussion about something totally different? :D |
Re: Fun thread - your favourite bot names...
Luckily no, old French is not much different from modern French. The vocabulary tends to sound a bit medieval and some sentence constructs which are not commonly used nowadays were the rule back then, but I'd say if you can read modern french you can read old French without too many problems. The biggest problem is, indeed, the vocabulary of certain words which have now become completely obsolete.
The oldest French text known to date was, indeed, a weird mix of Latin and Gaul, with already transformed litteral structures. This text (very short) can be viewed here, accompanied with a modern french as well as english translation http://www.historique.net/philologie/serments/ this, indeed, is some wicked text :D but the "classical" old french is something that resembles more http://abu.cnam.fr/cgi-bin/go?troylion1 A normal native frenchman could perhaps not understand it fully, but get a grasp on 80% of it without too much trouble. |
Re: Fun thread - your favourite bot names...
my few favorite botnames are a bit vulgar but hit the spot just right:

Re: Fun thread - your favourite bot names...
Squirminator :D
|
Re: Fun thread - your favourite bot names...
i have a bot named:
Pierre-Marie-Baty and somehow this bot always talks about an RACC bot :S :D |
Re: Fun thread - your favourite bot names...
Here's some of the names I have put in the shrikebot_names.txt
Arthur_Dent Attila_The_Nun Djengis_Ban Whosa_Bot Recently I was thinking about adding: Napoleon_Bot_Aparte Alexander_The_L33t Anyone got more twists on histories conquerors ? |
Re: Fun thread - your favourite bot names...
lmao @ Cpl. Shrike... :D
Alexander_the_L33t... lol! Hm, Arthur Dent... another one of those Douglas Adams readers, huh? Well, I called a bot "Harun Al-RushIt"... but sometimes it's not so much the name that makes it funny, but just how the name sounds or what's behind ot - or the general impression. Take Pierre's approach: Those old texts aren't funny at all, but the combination is hilarious! Some more of my favourites are "Killing you softly" and "Fraggermeister" (which is phonetically 99% identical to "Jägermeister", a famous German liquor...). Most other names I have are funny if you're German, but the gag gets lost in any other language. 9_9 @ PMB: Thanks for the info, that was quite interesting! I don't speak french, but with Latin and Spanish knowledge it's not too difficult to get at least a general idea of some passages. That first text really was half Latin! Was this really "officially" French or still Occidental? |

I couldn't remember where the heck i got that name from. Yep im a big SciFi fan. Although it is quite some time ago since i read my last book. |
Re: Fun thread - your favourite bot names...
Is it really possible to forget names like Arthur Dent, Ford Prefect, Zaphod Beeblebrox, Tricia McMillan (aka Trillian) and of course Marvin, the depressed android?! :D
I recently dug one of the books out of my shelf again, flipped two or three pages, and 3 or 4 hours later I discovered that a) I had read the entire book again and b) it was kind of late... *g* So much from these books has been taken over by others. Wasn't a mapper or texturer involved in the making of as_iraq and cs_iraq who called himself Zaphod Beeblebrox? And Trillian is the name of a chat tool now. Not to forget Bablefish, the translation site - it has its name from that little fish you had to slide into your ear, where it lived from your brain waves and translated any language into your own... 9_9 It's a good thing, though, that the bots here on this forum are not like Marvin from HGTTG - they'd all commit suicide at round start! :D |
