Well yeah...but you can't play online :(
I think you could get the game + a cd key from fileplanet, but fp stopped with that. You can still download the game(without a key) from somewhere else though.

Hmm, and it'd be tough to find a copy to buy. Quake on the other hand would be perfect, its free and theres lots of great mods and source ports out.

I would definently like to host a server of that.

Quake is free? The game is open source, but I think you still need the game data.
However if you want a free clone of tribes: http://www.legendsthegame.net/
Its a nice game with good graphics, but it doesn't have any vehicles so far.

So.. I'm still really up for this idea, but it kind of died.

Aside from me, do we have any volunteers?
Would a significant number of people actually want to regularily play on the server?
Would it be better to have a one day per week game session, so we have a full server instead of constantly near empty one?
What games/mods?

There is shareware versions of Quake 1 and 2 (which are gratis), and you can compile the source code to get rid of the restrictions (can't use custom data).
