For Spyware protection, I use Ad-Aware and Microsoft's for real-time protection.

Does the real time protection from microsoft's spyware program mess up your steam though?

I reccomend installing steam to a different directory. Download the crappy small installer and try to login.
If it works copy your cache files into that steam.
I use microsoft/GIANT 's anti-spyware and it doesn't affect my steam.
