OK, mozilla supports something similar (keyword:<search string>), but it should be an actual protocol, available as a IE/netscape plugin. I've seen one for 'steam://' to connect to a steam server. google:// should be next.
That is a very good idea, dstruct2k! I'll borrow your google hack right away
*edit*
it works great... but it doesn't take accentuated characters
For example if I type "google déplacer fenêtre C++" it comes up with a search for "d?placer fen?tre c"

Why don't you just use Opera? There's a search bar right next to the address bar by default, and I can just select where and what to search (google, msn, eBay, amazon.com, download.com, google groups, mp3/audio, alltheweb, lycos, etc. from a drop-down list, enter anything there (supports special characters) and there I go. I've never plyed around with that, but I'm sure it's customizable.

I can't confirm that from my own experience. I have Opera and IE on my internet machine, and I even surf the web using both of them at the same time sometimes - IE for secure and trustworthy sites, Opera for others (due to its easily customizable and generally better security features). You can import your IE favourites (which I don't use) into Opera automatically, and the only question you have to decide is which browser to associate HTML files with, if you have some saved on your HD.
To be precise, if it weren't for the insanely high integration of IE and Windows, I wouldn't use IE at all. But some programs -even some which have nothing or hardly anything to do with the web- require IE, and besides there are some crappy sites out there that aren't programmed according to valid and widely agreed programming standards, thus only working with IE. That's the only reason why I kept it. But I have never experienced any problems due to the coexistence of IE and Opera on my machine. Or could you state an example? Maybe I just don't recognize them...?

Well, these were just the examples I was about to mention...
Insanely high integration, indeed... And I don't like the idea of using two hammers for the same nail. If I can live at the expense of a few extra features such as the search bar and keep only one browser to do the job, I'll stick with IE...

I don't trust IE enough to use it for any site...
I've been infected with spyware and adware so many times because of some stupid IE exploit some advertisers use..
I even keep up to date with IE updates and I still get infected..
Thats why I got Firefox...
