Default your hosting, your webspace - 12-03-2004

after the thread about internet access i wonder how much people pay for their internet hosting (server or webspace) i don't talk about free stuff, but real webhosting. in particular i was shocke how expensive dutch dedicated server offer are:

one of the cheapest dutch server i found was:
200€+ for setup
59€ /monthly fee
0-10 GB included (not shure if 10 are in the cheap offer)

shared-hosting was around 20€ /month for some 200+ mb space and 5 GB traffic

for comparison in germany a reasonable "good" hoster
100€ setup
40€ /monthly fee
100 GB included

a cheap german one
50€ setup
30€/ monthly fee
75 GB included.

shared-hosting is 5€ /month for 300 mb space and 25 GB traffic (php/ mysql and 2 domains), 10 € setup

so folks what are your rates for server and/or shared hosting ?

I don't know how much a dedicated server costs in France but I managed for my racc-ai.com domain to get a 50Mb hosting on a Unix server with PHP and email, and this for free, thanks to a relative. It was initially meant to be a one-year temporary hosting but it seems they've forgotten me since then...

However now I enjoy the Bots United server which is now hosting all my files, that's one privilege of being part of the Bots United crew, bot makers anyone ?

I'm in the very lucky position to work as a system administrator at a research institute. As I got permission to put my servers there for free I have everything you can dream of .
But sadly the institute will be closed at the end of the year which not only ends this great priviledge but also forces me to search for a new employment .

My host hosts my site for free, but then its only sort of a news and info page on a small company's games.

Today I read a german computer magazin (c't) and saw an advertise for a really cheap hoster (www.domain-go.de):

- 1 domain name
- unlimited traffic!
- 100 MB webspace
- POP3 mail accounts
- WebFTP
- PHP4
- Perl
- MySQL

2,99 €/month + 9,99 € setup fee

yeah that's the point, germany is so cheap on internet hosting, i'm afaid that some day in the near future you will be able to buy hosting at Aldi (mother of all discounters).

traffic cost in germany are so low, when i see how much that alone shoudl cost in .nl or .be i wonder if that is the same internet. i terms of speed there is no difference between germany and netherlands or belgium. they are as close and fast as north- and south- germany are. ping below 40, no more than 12 hops from server to client.

i know of some pretty cheap shared hosting sites.
http://www.xeromedia.net/ is in England
http://www.neptunehost.com/ is unbelievably cheap but my friend says they're great and not just cheating you.

[edit] i'm currently using xeromedia and i think they're great [/edit]

yes both do offer very much, nearly no limits, plenty of preinstaled scripts and stuff. very nice indeed.
the do not offer dedicated servers though, and for some business proposals you must/should have the security of having your own box. also for commercial customers its no big difference between 8 and 40 €/month.

yet still for anyone who needs a website with php mysq, a board a small shopping cart, they are perfect.

i wonder how many people the put on one server ;-)
for neptun the reseller stuff is funny, if i assume their servers have ~40GB hdd even a reseller would have to pay 640 $ / month for one single server, thats the same as renting a (german) server and paying a profesional 600 $ / mo to maintain it :-)
oh and the server do also have monitoring and stuff so the professional would realy have time to install extra stuff and make real business.

cheers
