Default hl.exe - Application Error, Memory could not be read - 19-02-2004

I tried installing WIP #9 w/ Metamod on my own, but I can't figure out what's wrong. I keep getting some crazy memory read error.

Something like, Counter-Strike: hl.exe - Application Error, bla bla bla, numbers, more numbers, memory could not be "read".

I'm using all the up to date stuff from Stefan's site. That means I installed his metamod, WIP #9 and AI 1.0. I'm running winXP.

I suspect metamod since when I use the normal game dll it runs fine. Here's how I have everything set up, and I'm positive I did everything right. But just in case, here it is (with the normal liblist type install):

(When I write "..." I'm referencing to the Program Files\ root.)

My Metamod Path: ...\Steam\SteamApps\badrhetoric@hotmail.com\counte r-strike\cstrike\addons\metamod\dlls\metamod.dll

- My Metamod Plugin file is in the 'metamod' folder and contains only one line:

win32 C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\badrhetoric@hotmail.com\Coun ter-Strike\RealBot\dll\realbot_mm.dll

My RealBot AI Path: ...\Steam\SteamApps\badrhetoric@hotmail.com\counte r-strike\RealBot\dll\realbot_mm.dll

My liblist contains:

game "Counter-Strike"
url_info "
www.counter-strike.net"
url_dl ""
version "1.6"
size "184000000"
svonly "0"
secure "1"
type "multiplayer_only"
cldll "1"
hlversion "1111"
nomodels "1"
nohimodel "1"
mpentity "info_player_start"
gamedll "dlls\mp.dll"
gamedll_linux "dlls/cs_i386.so"
trainmap "tr_1"

Lastly, I run metamod from a shortcut command line which goes:

"C:\Program Files\Steam\Steam.exe" -applaunch 10 -dll addons\metamod\dlls\metamod.dll

The game starts up fine, however when I try to start a listenserver from 'New Game', I get the aformentioned memory error and the game crashes to the desktop.

I'm probably doing something stupid, but I provided all of my stuff above in case anyone spots something that I obviously missed. If you need any other info I'll edit-post it. Thanks for help in advance.

Your paths are correct, and if you copy and pasted them, then it appears the problem lies in your installation of Steam.

First, redownload and replace the DLLs.

Metamod.dll and Realbot_MM.dll

Then, if that does not work, attempt running counterstrike from an edited liblist.gam.

If that still does not work, try reinstalling steam. Do this by creating backups of the cache files, then download a cache-less steam. Put the cache files in their proper place.

If it still does not function, delete the half life caches and the counterstrike caches and have them redownloaded.

I don't think the paths are correct.

you don't need to list the drive letter.

this is my plugin files from metamod

// win32 addons/adminmod/dlls/admin_MM.dll
// linux addons/adminmod/dlls/admin_MM_i386.so

; Realbot 1.0 WIP 9.0
win32 ../realbot/dll/realbot_mm.dll RealBot

; AMX Mod
win32 addons\amx\dlls\amx_mm.dll
; linux addons/amx/dlls/amx_mm_i386.so

; booster lite 1.13
win32 addons/boosterlite/booster_lite_mm.dll

to get outside the cstrike folder, just add ../ infront of the path.

I had the same problem, but it turned out to be an incompatible amx plugin, i upgraded to 0.98 and that fixed it.

and this is my liblist.gam

game "Counter-Strike"
url_info "
www.counter-strike.net"
url_dl ""
version "1.6"
size "184000000"
svonly "0"
cldll "1"
hlversion "1120"
nomodels "1"
nohimodel "1"
mpentity "info_player_start"
gamedll "addons/metamod/dlls/metamod.dll"
trainmap "tr_1"

If you wanted to start realbot from the command line (without editing the liblist file), just add +localinfo mm_gamedll dlls/realbot.dll.

You dont need to not list the drive letter

As such, his paths are correct. No typos, and since he's not running an AMX mod that cant be the culprit.

Whether he uses ../ or not doesnt matter. As long as the directory structure is correct!

well then let me put it this way, did the stuff work before he put in realbot?

because i was getting the same thing and all i had to do was disable a plugin. but if he's not running amx, then its something entirely different.

Hi, I'm having the same problem as BadRhetoric. It's identical except that my maps will load and I can join my listen server. However, when I type in "realbot add" to add my first bot, it crashes and gives a memory error. All of my files are in the same locations as his. Another difference is that I am getting a message when I first load my server saying that I need to restart for it to be updated. Here is a paste of my console info:

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Btw, this is all running on XP too.

then you need to update steam. that should fix ur problem jake. right click on the cs title in the steam menu, then tell it to always keep this game up to date. then open up cs, it should update itsself.

It worked! Thank you richei!! However, I am still receiving the message about needing to restart my server for the updates. Forgive me but I left something out. When I updated Steam and my bots started suiciding, I downloaded some files someone posted a link to so that I could revert back to before the last update. I just brought back the updated files and now I can add bots in WIP #9. Any ideas on why it still wants me to restart each time? Thanks again!

I guess i'm not understanding what ur talking about. once steam is updated, it shouldn't be telling u to update steam, unless its not updating completely.

when u updated steam, you should've had to revert to any previous versions, maybe just the liblist.gam file (that should be write protected anyways).

I found that the memory issue is adminmod & realbot related. Try amxmod if you like. I did & no more errors.
