Default Quake question - 10-12-2004

Is it possible to bump up the map size in Quake? Instead of +4096,-4096, can I make it +16384, -16384?

that I don't know, but consider the other way around: instead of having hulls of size N, couldn't you make the hulls of size N/4 ?

Possibly, but that could cause another problem. You would lose accuracy while mapping. You would have to do quite some modding on the compile tools, and scale the physics. I am really hoping Botman comes in here and tells me a way to hack the engine to do this without scaling anything.

IIRC, the map sizes in Q3 are up to +/- 64k, so its not impossible. I'm not real familiar with the Quake engine source, so I'm not sure how easy it would be. I assume you'd have to be more precise in how you handle maps (using floats instead of integers). The best bet is to check the numerous quake engine projects and forums out there - theres a pretty busy community dedicated to modifying this engine.

It already uses floats. I need to know if the limitation is in the compile tools or the engine.

A little old thrad, I know. The HL Rally team did this on the HL engine. Their hulls are 1/5th the size of the normal HL ones. No changes to the compilers were done except using other hull filles when compiling.
