Default Far Cry demo problems - 21-05-2004

I had already played the Far Cry demo on a friend's computer and I liked it, so I decided to give it a try on my machine.

AMD XP2600, 512DDR@333, GeForce4 MX (onboard).

But when I started it up I landed in the middle of this >

And no way to get a better display, no matter how I tweaked the setup. Even disabling write combination and lowering all the sliders for the nVidia drivers in Windows would not work. Stupid DirectX!

And with this demo you can't run in OpenGL it seems

Then I noticed that series of files in the Far Cry directory: XRenderD3D9.dll, XRenderNULL.dll, XRenderOGL.dll
well I just renamed XRenderOGL to XRenderD3D9 and I was able to get Far Cry to run in OpenGL with l33t graphics

I'm posting it here so that if others experience the same problem (fuckedup display) with the Far Cry demo that might be the solution for them too

On the ubisoft support website, I recall some instructions on how to run far cry with opengl but I think it applied to the full retail version and not the demo.

So how does it look and perform in opengl?

it looks very good

However the FPS are a little slower than DX9, but the display looks definitely like how it's meant to look
Not surprisingly though very few advanced options tweaks work with OpenGL, most of what you can touch just makes the game crash. I suppose that's because these options to raise/lower the details were made with DX9 only in mind...

I finished the demo tonight btw, it's a good game. A bit disappointed by the AI though: all they do is attacking you Just bury yourself in a hole or in the middle of a bush and wait them coming... how boring

I read somewhere that you can change some config file manually, so no need to rename dlls

I noticed that as the difficulty level increases, the AI is more likely to call for reinforcments and stay back as opposed to charging into a "hot zone". Maybe I was just a little whacked because of how amazing some of the visuals are in that game.

Default AI demo vs. AI full - 22-05-2004

In the full version you can't just hide in a bush or behind a corner. They will flank you out, searching for you and throwing grenades into you heading.
And they like to kill you with their vehicles, making skidmarks on your body.
