Default Some facts about the "gaming-industry" - 09-11-2006

Hi I was interested in some facts how the gaming-industry grew in the last years and to my surprise I found that it is not growing at the moment. Here are some facts:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...eo_games#Games

http://www.theesa.com/facts/sales_genre_data.php

http://archive.gamespy.com/stats/

To my surprise I found that older games are still much more interesting for the people than new games for online-play. When you see the stats on Steam or Gamespy the new engines (like Source) are not "on top". Also the old titles (Half-life1 etc.) had much more copys than new games (HL2). I donīt know much about the gaming-companys, how do you think about it?

Actually, I'm more surprised that FPS and MMORPGs only account for 25% of the online world, unless I'm misreading something... It just seems to me that big game developers are doing more to piss off their fans than excite them.

For example, counterstrike source. Instead of thinking about using the HL2 game engine to throw stuff at other players, or play DOD:S with good bots, I'm thinking about steam, a more restrictive EULA, crappy SDK and less mod support - (http://games.slashdot.org/article.pl.../04/17/1439247 )
and how much money I need to spend on a l88t setup so the game runs properly. Similar situation with BF2 from what I've heard. So I didn't buy HL2, and I'm waiting until CS:S gets cheaper in the retail stores.

There are only 2 games I'm really excited about that are in development-

both planning on good bot support in the final release
