Default *****n' steam!!! - 10-06-2004

Alright, I'm just after re-installing windows and now steam.

When I want to debug with steam I make a SteamApp.cfg in half-life folder with ..

SteamAppId=70
SteamAppVersionId=0
SteamInstallPath="C:\Program Files\Steam"
SteamAppUser="<email>"

And copy the Steam.dll from Steam folder to hallf-life folder

Now this used to work before.. now it doesn't.

When I have steamapp.cfg and steam.dll in half-life folder I get

"the local steam service is not running" (even tho it IS) and it quits

When I have only the steam.dll file in half-life and not the SteamApp.cfg then it says the same as above...

When I have steamapp.cfg and NO steam.dll in half-life folder I get "couldn't load gfx.wad" and quits

When I have nothing in it at all I get the same as above.

And, Yes I DO have "-steam" on my command line

PS : I have a feeling it's not even reading SteamApp.cfg I've put many syntx errors into it and it doesn't show an error message with the syntax error in the file which what it SHOULD do.

AHHHH! Help....

*****'n Windows!!!

Let this be a lesson... ALWAYS disable the silly "Hide file names for known types" option in folder options.. I usually do, but forgot after re-installing windows.

my Steamapp.cfg had a name like "SteamApp.txt.cfg" But all I could see was "SteamApp.cfg" Making me REALLY confused.... 8D and obviously its name isn't exactly SteamApp.cfg so it wouldn't read the thing.!

theres two easy ways of preventing that, in notepad anyway.

1. Save as "SteamApp.cfg" (w/o the ") with filetype: All Files
2. Save as "SteamApp.cfg" with the quotes.

Heh, what I did was to right click on the folder area and select "new -> notepad file" and renamed it to SteamApp.cfg which made it "SteamApp.txt.cfg"
