yeah they just made much more difficult at first.
after you enter everything once, all you have to type is "hldsupdatetool" I imagine you could even run it from windows (not having to enter anything into the command prompt)
Now I don't know about what Steam did to my games but now whatever the game I try to run it says "This game is currently unavailable. Please try again later!"
WTF ???
I mean, these are MY frikkin games, I have frikkin PAID for them !!! WTF I can't play them when I want now ???

PM are you sure your game is up to date? (properties on cs icon)
Keep them always up to date.
I got the same problem yesterday...
Now it works, but after 6 hours of loooooooooooonnnnnnnnnnnnnnnng update..
it appears that quitting Steam and launching it again fixed the problem.
Fiber, lucky DSL man, I just CANNOT make the games update themselves automatically! If I select "always keep this game up to date" in the Steam properties my 33k connection is DEAD! Simple !!
but in 6 months chances are that I might be able to get DSL... I cross fingers to the point of bending them over each other.

March 3, 2004, 8:09 pm · Erik Johnson Since this morning's update was released, the Steam network has been overloaded, causing many Steam users to be unable to login.
Until the Steam content servers are able to catch up with demand, some users will continue to experience slowness or unresponsiveness from the Steam client. We've been making some changes to the content servers today to accelerate this recovery, and we expect conditions to improve quite a bit by tomorrow morning.
Thanks, again, for your patience after this update.
And THIS is PROGRESS ?????????????????????????????????????????????????? ???????????????????????????????????????????
This is some of the worst I have seen yet...
Why not
1) stick to well defined releases.
2) make them availible on CD-ROm or at lest
3) make the releases availible on many different mirror sites?
What would be wrong with that?
SOOOO glad I havn't tried 1.6 yet..
And who (what manager + non-CS player) decided there should be a SHIELD?
