Doom 3 didn't kill Doom, and all the Quake sequels didn't kill Quake 1.

Yes the source of both HL1 and Quake - Quake 2 have been released , but they aren't open source , since you can still be (theoratically) get suited by ID or Valve for pirating their games..
Actually what the developers did was indeed very tricky!
they only released a part of it , in form of a MOD sdk while keeping the Main Engine classified source(like HL1) , or by freely releasing the source code but not freeing the maps , graphics , models, etc .. meaning that you can do whatever you want with the code but not with the full original game(like quake2)
