Default farewell FileFront - site announces - 26-03-2009

The first reports sounded like April fools jokes but it now looks official.

This backbone to free sharing gaming files is going down pretty quick (5 days), and since botting depends on the existence of the game resources and internet backbones it is bad news for us too.

I suggest you review what you have posted over the years and do your backups. Then we can discuss the best free options that remain.

I hope this does not cascade bandwidth costs on to smaller sites with detrimental results.

I know a possible substitute site for the future.
www.zippyshare.com
This website is 100% free, no sign-up required, unlimited disk space and you can upload up to 100 Mb per file.
The minus point is that the file is deleted after 30 days inactivity.
I don't know if you can create an account on it ( like rapidshare ), but I don't think so.
P.s.: Funny that the sites claims that there are no pop-ups while this is really not what it is in reality.

Berzerkr of Wolfmap.de reports seeing a new notice announcing new (actually the original) owners have bought filefront and are going to maintain it. Although I could not follow his link, It is credible since the previous owner ZiffDavis announced in January it was going to solely concentrate on its digital pcmag, and had already sold off some other assets to Hearst. But given all the work the various gaming groups put into downloading there are going to be some mirrors or complete packs put online in various sites to be sure.

Update: the link works for me now, so I guess its official. Hopefully the ex-moderators will be contacted by the new owners soon.
