Default Windows Vista and OpenGL... - 18-08-2005

For anyone who doesn't know, the new Windows Vista(formerly known as Longhorn) is not playing nice with OpenGL.
Check http://www.opengl.org/ ...
Basicly it will come down to this:
- If you want to use OpenGL + Aeroglass(= something which will make windows look pretty), OpenGL will be layered through DirectX. You only get OpenGL 1.4(no fancy new stuff) and it will be much slower.
- If you want to use OpenGL like you do now, aeroglass will be disabled.

Because of this, OpenGL looks less interesting on Windows and companies might want to switch to DirectX instead. This means that these apps only can run on Windows and not on other OS's like MacOS, linux etc.

Fortunaly there are already lots of OpenGL apps/games and thus the above thing might not happen if lots of people/companies start to complain

John Carmack is going to be pissed.

Not to mention this will open up quite a number of lawsuits. SGI sure as hell won't like this, along with some video card manufacturers.

Damn microsoft, but since ATI makes such crappy linux drivers I'm stuck with windows.
I'm also hoping Apple allows MacOS X to be installed on non Apple x86 machines, I'd switch in a second.

Hasn't anybody noticed before that the default video card drivers that come bundled with Windows XP for the half-billion cards that exist on the market work all superbly with DirectX but none of them with OpenGL ?

well, first, openGL 2.0 isnt out yet afaik, so now we are all using a lower version using extensions to bridge the gap between opengl specs and current hardware, that's normal. so that 1.4 point isnt really a point.

2. this windows vista is a beta !
3. professional software often uses openGL instead of directX, I guess M$ won't mess it up with them

It is true. This Win Vista will eat the RAM and the CPU. Windows XP Rules.
