Default idea: a new forum section: code clipboard. - 19-11-2004

that section is for everyone to share pieces of his/her code...
everyone can post useful code snippets there, just for others to learn or copy-and-paste

isn't that what bot n metamod coding is (except we extend it to all things)

maybe we could start a thread for this in the C++/php, whatever forum. .... the metamod bot coding forum wouldnt be the ideal place for this I think

I suppose that's why... not all people guard their codes like a dragon guards its treasure... Look at Whistler: He said somewhere that he might drop YaPB and develop a bot from scratch - in that case, he could be a nice guy and post proven and well-working parts of the YaPB code for other bot coders to learn.
Maybe there are more people who are as committed to free software as he is (did I get it right this time? ) and who'd be glad to share their knowledge - especially when it's about some good piece of code that otherwise would be thrown away never to be seen again.

The only downside I see is that it might make the "work" of people like our ever-popular [3]Colors etc. easier, but I guess this is a decision that's up to the coders who want to share their stuff...

All in all, I think this is a great idea- I'm just not sure where to put it: New section or sticky thread in an existing section... I can't really judge it (that's why I haven't voted yet), but I think a forum section will offer much better usability and make it easier to find what you're looking for - far easier than an endless thread on the thirteenth page of which I might finally find the piece of navigation code I was desperately looking for. So I tend towards "y", but I'm going to wait for some more input from people who actually know what to do with code - unlike me.

it's maybe more for general code snippets than parts of certain bots. The latter is often more a design question and is quite different from bot to bot, e.g. you cannot just copy and paste a buy function. but for general stuff, ( like an in game realtime profiler ) this could be a nice idea.

as I said, I think a thread would be sufficient, no need for a whole new forum. the c++/php whatever forum isnt that lively at all, so my suggestion is to put it there

the poll might need a "good idea, but" choice

I don't think it would be of big use. People can already post parts of their source code when they have a coding problem, and also one has to consider that a source code snippet, when taken out of context, is just meaningless ; i.e. before a code snippet can be understood easily and thus usable, the coder "introduced" its idea long before in the thread.

Also, not two people code their bots/mods/whichever app in the same way, and a good class implementation for someone will look like a complete mystery to another, and vice versa. If one wanted to share bits of code in a "copy and paste" fashion, this would only be appliable to the few podbot clones we have here (since they don't differ greatly). And even then, new users would have trouble tying the different parts altogether so that their copy and paste would produce actually compilable code.

What I'm personally doing, and what I've always been doing if you remember the old days at botman's, is that anytime I find something interesting or cool, I create a new thread in the relevant forum and I introduce the idea there, with a bit of sample code - usually from my own implementation, but simplified so that others can hopefully understand what I'm doing.

Promoting that sort of cooperation is what should be aimed at, but I'm not sure creating a forum specially dedicated to source code samples, all taken out of context, would be a good idea.
