Default ESRB changes Oblivion's rating - 06-05-2006

http://biz.gamedaily.com/industry/fe...id=12604&rp=49

Everyone has probably heard of it by now, but here it is again. The ESRB decided to change Oblivion's rating from Teen to Mature. They say its because the game is more violent than they first thought, and because the game has been modded by third parties to include nude skins for characters.

So, basically, since any game can be modded like this, the ESRB are claiming that every game should have a rating of Mature and that the ESRB is now a redundant entity.

What was morrowind's rating? Because you could do that there too. Strikes me as extremely slow.

I didn't like the "steps to prevent tampering line" one bit. The excessive modification to morrowind was what kept me playing it.

Unless someone gets a handle on this, it will be the beginning of the end for home grown modders like us.

Well the only reason it was changed and Morrowind wasn't is because when they made oblivion they left the nude femal body in the compressed files. There is no need to change the rating if someone else makes the model and you install it because the game doesn't come like that, it's you choice to install it. Even though you still have to install the nude model, it still comes with the game and makes it vaild content for rating.

But the point we make is that it was not the way people perceive it, and the comments made about altering things.

There was much uproar I believe over some skating game where you could add your own skins.

what people dont understand is that there is no law in the us that prohibits kids from buying mature, likewise there is no law that requires a esrb rating; that is totally bethesda soft. decision to allow esrb to rate thier games. I think that esrb is helpful for parents who want to purchase a game for a little 5 year old kid, other than that, its useless.
