The Steam engine is the same as the non-Steam engine. The Steam version of MODs (Counter-Strike specifically) has been updated slightly to include new weapons.

Starting the game running when using Steam is different than the standalone version of Half-Life (this is true from a user's point of view and if you are trying to start things up from the command line).

The only way you will get things working in Steam is to download and install Steam and test your code with it.

Also is there any differences between the initial release of steam and current version?

Yes, but nobody can run older versions of Steam, because as soon as you start it up, the Steam code downloads and installs all the latest Steam/game/engine code.

The only thing you have to support is the "latest" version of Steam (which is constantly changing about every 2 or 3 weeks, so you might have to constantly keep updating your code every 2 or 3 weeks).
