Default debian installation issues - 19-07-2005

just wanted to install debian, after having downloaded and burned the netinst version. but already while installing, it looks like it hangs ( ok, there is a text that I should wait, but 15 minutes should be enough ) when it's detecting DHCP servers. same issue when no network cables are connected to the computer. only funny thing is that the Num lock and another LED begin blinking

anybody a idea ?

No clue about debian.
But i found that when linux installers hang during install there is somethng wrong with the insmod's or device probing.
In redhat that's handled by kudzu.

On one PC i had to turn of the LPT port in the bios to get it to install.
But it could be any device tht doesn't like the linux probing or insmod.

I'm using the full CD images of Debian GNU/Linux 3.1 and it's no problem.
Try typing "linux expert26" command at the "boot:" prompt after booting from CD and it will use the 2.6 kernel (default is 2.4 kernel) and see if it will work.

99.9% certain it's a hardware issue. A badly written driver or a not-so-genuine chipset on your network card that screws the whole thing up. Some cards use common chipsets with known bus addresses but change the IRQ without notifying the BIOS, and as a result these cards most of the time fail to receive messages from the main bus (because they listen at the wrong time on it). Change your netcard, or try another kernel.
