.doc file format is M$ proprietary & confidential. Other word processing software doesn't support it (or at least doesn't support it very well). So it will be difficult for players who don't have Microsoft Word to read it or read it in Operating Systems other than Windows (e.g., GNU/Linux, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, etc.)

I just don't think anyone will buy M$ Word just for reading one document

You can use .rtf file or html file which also supports nice fancy text.

Don't complain too much. Mal has already done too much for us. You can change the file name by yourself! Also you can use wordpad to view doc file.

Whistler: I don't have MS word - I used Write, which comes with every MS OS.

Also, Fritz only runs in Windows ATM. If you've downloaded this for Linux, I'm sorry but it won't run. Perhaps in the future.

The readme docs are for the platform it was targeted (Windows).

Check the readme docs for more info.

I'm not "complaining", just a suggestion.
The wordpad in old versions of Windows doesn't likely to work with the latest .doc format. Also the wordpad will just give a lot of error messages & snip ALL the graphics in the .doc file if you don't have M$ word installed.

there are several other possibilities ... html is nice, but I think something like LaTeX would be even nicer. I started using that for my joebot xp file, it's really nice

Well, I've been meaning to create a really nice HTML readme, with an indepth manual, bot profiles listed, etc - but I haven't had the time, A.I. has been the focus.

I'll have to Google LaTex, I've never heard of it before. Does it allow gfx linkage?

http://www.latex-project.org/

it's also included with most of the GNU/Linux distributions

however that format isn't popular and it will need 3rd-party software to read it, so it may be not good for average players (who aren't likely to know what tex is).

there is also latex2html, for those who have no pdf, ps, or dvi viewer

but you may be right, the normal player may not have a pdf viewer
