"zip or rar" - neither, .tar.gz or .tar.bz2.
RAR is proprietary, and zip doesn't compress well. Also 7-Zip is way too slow for large files

"Dynamic or Fixed IP?" - Dynamic, as I only have 56k PCI modem

yes tar.x is nice(esp tar.bz2 ) But I didn't expect many people knew that format anyway...
