It doesn't pwn all, I think it only barely beats out Doom 3. Doom 3 was a lot more polished than HL2 is, its engine is better in some ways, and there is no Steam bullshit.
I'm not trying to start up a HL2 vs Doom 3 argument, they're both excellent games. I'm just saying HL2 isn't without flaw.
dude you relize that Doom 3 graphics are better... but the game really sucks... cause you just run around... no objective and just blow shit up... fun but not entertaing for long... plus the whole game is dark... so you never get to see the levels but they all look the ssame... thats why the game has such a small instal... cause everything in the game uses the same textures lol... each room is dark and has pipes on the walls

I agree with that. They should have made the levels more like the original Doom's were like. Sure they would have been "unrealistic", but they'd be a lot more interesting and fun to play in.
Same with monsters and monster placement. Endlessly spawning imps behind you gets old very fast. The original only used spawning critters occasionally, and when they did it was done quite well.
Some enemies weren't in the game very much at all, and those damned imps were around every corner.
HL2 even has some of this problem, fighting combine over and over gets old fast. They should have made a larger variety of monsters like HL1.
yeah but the killing in Doom is the same everytime... imp takes 3 shots from a shotgun every time... where as HL2 sometimes you can shoot someone in the face and the effect will be differenet each time
HL2 rules them all out.
It's not a matter of better graphics or better engine.
It's the whole thing. the ambiance, the style, the feeling, the story, the fact it has an SDK, more types of gameplay, ability for 3rd party mods, the abillity to hook in 3rd party dll's, well the list is endless.
the fact it has an SDK......ability for 3rd party mods
Doom3 has that too. id games have always had support for modders, and while their games may be weak from a game play standpoint, they have given a lot to the community on the technical side: GPL games and engines that are available for aspiring game devs to mod to their heart's content - something Valve hasn't done.... yet.
As for which is better, I prolly won't get my hands on HL2 til Xmas, so I'll have to wait til then!
Doom 3's modding community will never show its full potential, everyone went for making their mod in HL2. Doom 3 will probably see an early death due to lack of mod support. And by early death, I mean not having an active community for over 10 years like its predecessor.
And Valve must have a little shrine in their office to Mihn Lee. They owe pretty much everything to him and his mod team.
