Actually, I'm more surprised that FPS and MMORPGs only account for 25% of the online world, unless I'm misreading something... It just seems to me that big game developers are doing more to piss off their fans than excite them.
For example, counterstrike source. Instead of thinking about using the HL2 game engine to throw stuff at other players, or play DOD:S with good bots, I'm thinking about steam, a more restrictive EULA, crappy SDK and less mod support - (

and how much money I need to spend on a l88t setup so the game runs properly. Similar situation with BF2 from what I've heard. So I didn't buy HL2, and I'm waiting until CS:S gets cheaper in the retail stores.
